Hi folks, my best mate has just called to see if I can help him out. He's on holiday with his wife and kids in Fowey this week and the alternator on his disco seems to have died. Is there anyone near that area with one, or anyone in Somerset with one they would like to sell?

I'm in Taunton so can collect and take it down to him if you're within 25 miles or so.

If it has a heatshield with it too then that would be a bonus!

Thanks ...

It would be easier if he called into Mill Autos in Snozzle and picked one up!

Lol been up since 5 and just had fried breakfast at tesco Taunton.

Have you tried dropping Blue Beasty a PM?

He's on the forum now (08:00 Mon 14/4/14)

Are you stalking me? :eek::p

If help is needed we have Removals01 and JonnyP close with Trewey coming a close 3rd :)

I am not too far from Fowey n happy to assist if needed.. :)
I wont be able to check back on here until lunch time, but will keep my phone on me..

wow!!! What a response!! Thanks guys!

He's got a second battery with him and a fair toolkit (on a family holiday eh?!) so I'm sure he'll be able to get to Mill in Snozzle (only just got that!) so I'll give them a call.

I'll post back at lunchtime if that's ok with an update, as it's not absolutely desparately urgent...

Thanks again guys!
Fred

ok, panic over, someone he met in the pub next door last night has turned up with both types of alternator, so he should be all sorted now.

Thank again chaps - what an outstanding response... very cool indeed :D

Glad he got sorted :)

It's probably only the brushes that have worn down.
Remove the alternator.
The brush packs (2 of them) are attached to the back of the alternator. Remove them and inspect for wear.
You will probably find that one of them has worn to the point that it is no longer touching the rotor.
Now engage your bodgers head. Find some more brush material from maybe another failed alternator. Remove the brush and make it fit your brush cage so it contacts the rotor and the remains of the original brush.
Bish, bosh, bash, alternator fixed and around £100 saved.
However, please make sure that your 'charging failure lamp' is illuminated in you dash before doing anything. If the alternator is not charging and the dash lamp is not illuminated then the lamp in the dash has blown and this will stop the alternator from working.

Good luck, Vince
