Hi, new to the forum. I have read several articles regarding white smoke from exhaust but all have loss of power, therefore I wish to share my problem in the hope someone can give me the correct advice.

I have a 1996 Disco 300tdi Automatic. About five months ago I noticed when I pulled up to the lights smoke from the exhaust however this stopped after 5 - 10 seconds. Recently the smoke has increased to the point where it is non-stop white. It smells burnt and does have the bluish tint all refer to. There is no overheating nor is there any loss of power. I have noticed one thing since this began and that is when I begin my journey and climb the hill, I hear a scraping sound for a second. It sounds like a belt or something slipping but it feels as if it is coming from under the gearbox area. This might be another issue that is not related.

One mechanic says the smoke "might" be from the rings and he wants to strip the engine. Another mechanic said that the slipping noise and smoke "might" be timing belt related. Not too happy having the engine stripped if not needed. Please help.:(

Have you checked your gearbox fluid level? I ignored a similar thing on a previous car before the torque convertor packed in. I can't remember exactly how it managed it but the TC was leaking and the fluid was being pulled into the engine and out through the exhaust as white smoke.

get your timing checked there are two types of white smoke ,water vapour ,disperses quickly and unburned fuel ,smells and hangs about

Thanks for the quick response. Will check the gearbox fluid in morning (too cold to go out in boxer).
jamesmartin - as you describe, smells and hangs about. Is this timing related or something else?

which is unburned fuel ,incorrect timing can cause it ,poor injector ,inlet valves not opening fully etc

Worth checking its not pulling the brake fluid through the servo pipe as well ps have you been wading ? You might have water in the fuel.

OK. Morning.....

Started the car first thing this morning with bonnet open. I had the oil cap off and gave the car a rev. The white smoke is coming out of the top too (not as much as exhaust) and this is whilst the car is stone cold. Any thoughts?
