Posting for a mate !

Who's just bought a V8 Discovery 2, approx 120k on the clock with the 4l thor engine. When he bought it a couple of months ago all was good but it has starting consuming more and more oïl . Last trip he did he used 8 liters of oïl to do 350 miles :(:(:(

Starts and runs perfectly, pulls like a train but smokes, has an LPG conversion that works perfectly, no oïl in coolant, coolant level stable, no strange noises or oïl leaks etc .......

He has tried different oïl's but even 20w 50 does'nt make any difference. compression test shows approx plus or minus 180 psi on all cylinders.
Thinking it might be scrapper rings ? Valve seals ? but would like to get head around how it was'nt useing any oïl and now is before going any further ??

Thanks in advance :):)

I know ! Mad is'nt it !
No oïl leaks and although it does smoke not as much as you would think for nearly 2 litres every 100 miles !!!!!

If the oil control rings weren't working properly you'd almost expect the compression rings to be equally bad and have no compression and heavy breathing. Is there any sign of oil being forced into the air intake via the crankcase breather system?

Does he only drive on LPG all the time?
Try driving for a couple of weeks on petrol

All look a nice chocolate colour except for 2 that are oiled up .

Nice chocolate colour hope it’s milk chocolate and not dark.

Apparently there is no crank pressure as such from the oil filler or dip stick !

The other alternative is a failed head gasket, but i would expect that to blow exhaust gases into the oil, not oil into the cylinder

Yes ! It starts up on petrol and once warm automatically switches over onto LPG .

Why ? What’s your thinking ??

No oil leaks and yet it’s going somewhere?
LPG burns clean so mix in a little oil and you may not see it in comparison. You have good plugs.

It might run a bit lumpy on petrol when you first do it, but worth a shot.

It’s just a hunch/feeling and can’t do any harm, might take a couple of tank fulls but if nothing changes then it’s deeper. And probably due some major work 120k is getting up there.

My 3.5 burnt oil with 100k miles on the clock, the indicator was blue smoke for the first mile after a cold start, so it burnt around approx 0.5 litre per 1000 miles not a great deal but it indicated a worn engine, so I then quickly sold the vehicle.

But it seems with your friends disco’s engine... if there isn’t any engine oil leaks, but as u state it “smokes” so it’s burning oil at a grand amount, just replacing piston rings will only be only a short time cure, months in fact.
Unfortunately is time for an engine re-bore or a recon engine to be fitted or sell the vehicle as the previous owner did.

Ok Cheers Worth a try ! But I think the main tank has been replaced by the gas tank and only has a small petrol tank for start up !!

Thank you for all your replies :):)

Not had chance to stick my nose in the old girl yet but comfirms what I was already thinking !

I can't believe the V8 engine is consuming that much oil. 8L is a lot of oil! Sounds more of an external leak. Rear seal blown????

How can you tell this?
With the oil filler cap off, place a rubber glove over the oil filler tube and see if the glove inflates.
If it inflates quickly, there could be a clogged plastic PCV valve in the right side of the rocker cover.
