Hi folks,

It's been a long time since I last posted on here but I still have my trusty (well fairly trusty and not too rusty) Disco 2.

I recently decided to give the old thing a bit of a make over and at the moment it is in for a de-catted exhaust system, a new MAF sensor, EGR removal and if needed a new fuel pump. (it has been running like a very slow dog for a while and certainly needs a new MAF if nothing else).

Once all this is done it is remap time but I am not sure where to go for this. I'm based near Lanark so about 40 miles South of Glasgow. I'm looking to improve the torque curve across the rev range and get a sensible hike in power (so say up to about 160 bhp - nothing silly). Not over fussed about mpg - keeping it about the same would be nice but not critical.

Can anyone recommend a good and reasonably local place to go to get the ECU remapped? Also what sort of money are we talking about here? I'm not really wanting to spend a fortune but would be ok to spend up to about £300 if the results were going to be really noticeable.

Cheers in advance

Try Dynachip he does a mobile service from £225, top bloke and knows what hes on about. Did my TD5 90, 10k later its still excellent.

Highly recommended.

I would second those comments about dynachip. He comes to you and mine has been done for a couple of years now. Its like chalk and cheese.

Thanks guys, sounds ideal. Once I get the Disco back, and assuming that no other major issues are diagnosed, I'll give Dynachip a call to arrange a visit.

Based on where you are located, there is a guy in Carluke, Castlehill Ind Estate that does it. I haven't used him but I have heard good things. PM me if you want more info?

Thanks Meego,

Carluke is certainly close enough to make the journey worthwhile.

I found a website for Quantum tuning in Carluke - are these they guys you were talking about? Looks good but one thing stands out - the power and torque gains they say they can achieve are pretty modest (120 to 140 bhp and 260 to 304 Nm).

What sort of gains have you guys managed to achieve from a remap? I was lead to believe that up tp 160bhp and an equivalent hike in torque was pretty straight forward for the TD5, or are we talking about uprated fuel pumps, high flow air filters and turbo adjustments for this as well?

TD5 tuning!

Mine currently has the following, which should give you an idea -

Decat & Straight Thru Exhaust
EGR Blank with Boost Gauge fitting
Serck Full Size Intercooler + Terrafirma Silicone Hoses
Dynachip Remap - He asks you what you want from the car as well as giving suggestions. He gave me a strong map, which I accepted
Boost turned up to 18psi

When I had the map done I already had the decat, straight thru & EGR blanked. From what I have gathered the Map alone brings it to around 150 - 160bhp, depending on who you go for. Obviously you could have a very strong map done but it may well smoke like hell but have oddles of power, not ideal. I settled for as much power & torque as I could get without impacting MPG (too much) or excess smoke. The most important thing about getting it mapped is to choose the right company, many will load a 'generic' map which just injects more fuel and will cause excess smoke. Some do fancy rolling road maps, which are the best but are pricey and only really useful for high end tuning. Dynachip is in the middle, cheap but knows exactly what hes doing and can adjust the map to suit your own specific needs.

According to what I have read figures should be around the 180bhp/360nm mark, maybe a little higher (been meaning to get it tested, theres a place near me that does it for £30). Kept the standard filter as the 'performance' ones will eat your MAF. As for MPG it has improved IF you drive it properly not flooring around, I average 26 - 28mpg around town 30+ on motorway journeys, if I am sensible. More often than not though its around 24mpg. Either way its a small sacrifice for what is wildly improved driveability, I mean I can actually over take people now. As for off road, far improved, the extra power is brilliant especially on sandy surfaces.

Currently driven give or take 10k miles with everything fitted, inc off road with no issues.

If you want to delve into the TD5 tuning there are a fair few threads on here about it. Hope this is of some help

Bankz - awesome, thanks for this really useful info. Sounds like Dynachip is the way to go if he is willing to come to me up in Scotland. I'm not after stupid power or torque, coz let's face it, it's not like the car will ever really handle it without a lot of other mods to the suspension etc.

I'd be happy with about 160 - 170 bhp and more importantly a much better torque curve. With the exhaust mods already under way and a sensible map that sounds perfectly feasible based on what you have said.

I'll report back when I have got the Disco back from getting the exhaust, EGR, MAF and fuel pump done. Who knows, I might decide that with all these things sorted the car is OK, but I suspect not - I feel the need to fettle it a bit now that I have decided to keep it! Certainly the novelty of being able to overtake in it will be interesting.

Good plan, I would also consider fitting a full size intercooler. The Serck/Britpart (yes I know Britpart but they are rebranded Sercks) ones are £350, £70 for some decent hoses and you'll be very happy with the increase in torque and overall better running. Pretty easy to fit as well.

I had the straight through exhaust and EGR removed and found it made no difference to the power though it sounded better. The remap made a massive difference, losing that terrible flat spot you seem to have (like the old Tdi also had) and just made it so much more responsive. I replaced the intercooler on my last Disco and thought it a waste of money given I wasn't tuning the hell out of it and currently I have had no overheating or loss of power when its worked hard with the standard intercooler still on. Each to their own.

As said previously,Mike at Dynachip is the man for the job, when it comes to re mapping TD5,I had mine done by him,the difference to the power of the engine is amazing, you tell him what you want out of the engine,he then advises you what re map is the best,he then either swaps the chip in the ecu,or not if a later model, then downloads the re map,he travels the country doing this,so getting to Scotland should be no issue for him.
