Had both the P38 and now have a TD5 Disco ok the P38 was the 4.6 hse.
The ride quality on the P38 was a lot better having said that the TD5 is good.
The reason I got rid of the P38 was reliability chasing it round the houses with money.Performance wise I could not comment as I say mine was the 4.6.
The reason I got the Disco was the fact there are less electics to go wrong with it compared to the P38 plus its got 7 seats.A down side of the Disco is it wont go in a normal garage I had to raise my garage roof and higher the door plus add a piece to the bottom of the door.As a few have said test drive a couple and see what you like.

Wow, that's dedication to wanting a Disco!! Can you not lower the rear air suspension to lower the back end, or does it not work like that?

That is a consideration - I have a carport my car lives in and a Range Rover just squeezes in there - I wonder if a Discovery will! Hmm...

Thanks for posting and very interesting.....as i thought i had definately decided on a RR HSE/DSE

But im always curious as to what the ratio of good to bad is....because people will mostly voice an opinion when something is bad and if its good they dont really say anything (experiences with many forums im involved in).

Used to put the P38 in the garage as it was originaly built buy myself when I had my first rangie a 3.9 no problems standard sized garage door. The Disco being taller I had to do the roof and door. The TD5 is a nice motor and with the P38 I had it was the constant money thrown at problems that put me off getting the DSE.The TD5 is much more fixable when it goes wrong. As for lowering the suspension yes you can if you have the coded fob to do it but its basicly to aid hitching a trailer/caravan the suspension can be raised in the cabin by button by 2 inch to clear obstacles while off roading.Mines the autobox and its like the rr classic lever for transfer box and the selector where the P38 is a H pattern move lever across to select low another electric gizmo to go wrong.Have a look on discovery 2 web site nicks done a cracking job of putting what can go wrong with the Disco 2 and how easy it is to fix plus have a look at - the D2 boys club forum hes also member of that.Mines the ES so top spec and I love it the ride comfort is good it has to be as her indoors suffers with back problems.Mines a 2001 year and a former doctors car and has just done short of 92,000.The air bags are a doddle to do compared with the P38 as I did mine in January both the ones on I recon were what it came with stamped land rover on them. The traction control and hill descent are a doddle to use once you get to know how they work.Have a go in them both I would say just keep in mind there are more electric bits to go wrong in a P38.

Thanks Les - good to have an informed opinion!

For me, there is something about the P38 that draws me in, I really love the look of them and much prefer them to my mates Disco 1 (also an ES) - but perhaps driving a Td5 Disco 2 will be enough to convince me they are the way to go?
