OK, just had a female hound of a time replacing the oil filter on my Disco (2000 D2Td5).

To make things easier next time, I'm wondering if it's possible to reroute the oil return pipe that currently runs directly under the oil filter can, so somewhere less in the $%^&* way.

So, first question: Is there a modified pipe made? If so, who does it, and where can it be bought from?
Second question: Has anyone actually done a modification like this?

I found it easiest with a decent pair of grippy work gloves on, takes some squeezing to get yer 'and in though

You guys appear to be making the assumption that it was done up super tight last time. It wasn't. The can was an aftermarket one bought from Craddocks (part of their Td5 service kit), and somehow, despite being put on properly, seized in place over the last year; the rubber gasket WAS lubed with a light film of oil prior to installation at that time, too, before you ask. The band tool wouldn't fit in the gap, the belt tool kept slipping, and the normal filter pliers (same as Jamesmartin above used) kept slipping due to the damn stupid location of the can combining with me loosing grip on the pliers. It took a locking set of filter pliers and some penetrating oil to get it out, but the problem isn't so much that, as the access to the damn things (and replacing them), hence the question regarding the rerouting of the oil return pipe underneath the can location.

So. Any one know if suck a rerouting part or kit exists, and if anyone has performed such a rerouting?

theres no re routing kit i know off, its easier if you remove turbo shielding
 
Dont worry bud i wasnt assuming youd done it up super tight! Similar happend to me, took me 2 hours to get it off!

It only needs doing up hand tight, plus a 1/4 turn.

As I said no one does a re-route pipe, youd have to take your current one to a pipe place (Pirtek etc) have them remove the flanges/banjo and lengthen it.

I've used an OEM LR filter this time, and got the dedicated filter spanner for it, which'll make it easier to undo, if not easier to get out of there, next time. But I still want to reroute that damned silly pipe. Whoever designed that thing needs a 30mm spanner slapped somewhere useful :eek:.

BTW, the locking piers I used is this one, from Draper:

It's their "53-118mm Self Grip Multi Purpose Oil Filter Wrench". Got mine from Amazon. Works just like a set of mole grips, but with a massively big set of jaws. Excellent bit of kit.
