Hello everyone!

I have a Disco 2 (2002) that i bought as a non-starter. The person I bought it off knows a lot about cars and thought that the problem was with the immobilizer. With some work i managed to get a second have hawkeye off of eBay and do some diagnostics of my own. I managed to disable the passive immobilizer in the settings. (tried doing the eka code 3 days in a row and nothing worked to gave up on it)

Then I could get it to turn over, however this didn't fix my problem as it still didn't work. I then thought that the fuel pump wasn't working after taking some of the connectors off and turning the key (no fuel).
To test if it was the wiring I managed to get 2 wires direct from a separate battery and touch them on the positive/negative of the fuel pump. Nothing. Replaced the fuel pump and now i'm getting fuel through to the engine.

Still not starting. Then I saw in a post somewhere that the crank sensor (if not registering anything) would prevent the engine from starting. Replaced that today. Still no Luck.

I have trolled Landyzone and other forums to try and find ways of getting this to start however I cant seem to find anything I can use.

The engine is going to go into my defender 90 once I know it works, but I want to get it working first before I go ahead with such a massive job.

Sorry for the very long-winded post however I wanted to try and explain all my steps i've gone through to get this thing to work and then hopefully get some good suggestions about what to do.

Other things i have done are looked at ecu connections and removed a small amount of oil in the connector.
I have also had the rocker cover off and looked at the injector connections (small amount of oil in there but nothing that I can see would stop it from working.
Used the Hawkeye tool to look at EMS dtc's and nothing has come up. Also used it to fire each injector separately. (so i know they work as i could hear them fire)

Lets get this old beast up and running again :)

1. Measure the voltage on the battery while cranking, if it drops below 10,5V it will not start even though the starter is spinning well the ECU can't open the in jectors due to the voltage drop
2. can you feel any diesel smell from the exhaust while crankng?
3. if it's manual try tro bump start it, there are cases when the starter disturbs the crank signal.
4. if you have hawkeye read live data rpm while cranking, it shoud be above 250 to start

Will give those things a go tomorrow. Was just talking with my father this evening about the smell of fuel at exhaust end. I had smelt it but only after a minute of it sitting from me cranking it.
its on a trailer atm so bump starting it is a last resort as i then couldn't move it once I get it off.
On the hawkeye subject, I have tried looking at live data, but when I do it goes back to start screen and doesnt give me any data... only when i start cranking that is.

Hi there Sierrafery,

So turned the disco over and couldn't smell any fuel. I know its getting to the union just before the injector fuel rail. coudl the passage into the fuel rail be blocked by some gunk or is there something electrical that stops the fuel going any further then the union?

number 1 is the only one i can try next really as hawkeyee as mentioned isn't working for the live data. and not possible to bump start it currently.
Will get back to you on the voltage drop :)
 
Right. I measured voltage of the battery I had on there and it was at 12.9. When I started turning it over it stayed around 11 for a second then dropped to 10.2-10.4. Popped a fully charged battery with 13.5v and did the same thing. Put them both together (with jump leads) and still got the same thing. Any ideas on how to minimise the voltage drop??
 
I'm affraid you have to replace the starter cos due to some internal short it creates the voltage drop and disturbes the crank signal as well, that's quite common and it's confirmed if it starts towed without cranking it hence point 3 from my recommendations

Perfect. Thanks so much for your replies. I’ll see whether it’s worth doing or not. May be able to buy second hand one if easy to get. Not sure. Many thanks SierraFery!
