Hi all
Just come back from hol's and found brown staining on right rear wheel coming from centre of wheel. I thought it was copperslip from refitted wheels but it now has a gear oil smell to it.
Removed wheel and it appears to be coming from centre of disc/ shaft nut area. Any ideas how its getting out as I can't see a seal in the area .
No noises or play from the bearings ether???????

i have got same symptoms, just oil leak, no noise, no play in bearings. i think the wheel hubs needs to be changed. just cannot decide which one to buy. there are some on ebay for 100 quid, britpart for about 160, and oem with timken bearings for 200 quid.

Hub seal.easy fix.u need to take hub off and it is a rubber seal that goes in the hub.2 quid odd and a new lock washer and a gasket for the half shaft.also if bearing is fooked replace it.half hour job max

that works for defender and disco 1. not for disco 2, the hub is not dismantable here. if it leaks it must be replaced.

Looked at diagram of hus assembly and can't see any seal in it.

there is one o ring that seals the hub to the axle. it leaks very seldom. usually it is the internal seal inside the hub that leaks. unfortunately, this internal seal is not replaceable.

Mine is the same changed o ring still the same hub needs to be changed that's progress old land rover £10 bearing new land rover £100 hub

where did you find a hub for £100? ebay? from what i read these cheap unbranded hubs usually last around than 10k

Ok £200 or £300 what difference does it make old disco £10 for a bearing wouldn't put a jap one on not worth the time

Axle oil seeps along the half shaft if there is a breakdown in the sealant that should be present when the hub was fitted. Take the hub off and smear the halfshaft with a suitable caulking sealant, then refit the hub as normal with a dab of sealant on the retaining nut.

That link does'nt mention the requirement for sealant on the driveshaft which I suspect is the problem in 4x4FORKS's case especially as he mentions oil seeping thro the axle nut.

Is there not an o ring, as opposed to seal, to do that?

Put new o ring on mine and sealed it no better done it again used grease this time not sealer it's better but still a bit of oil .Have now been told that there is a seal in the hub that goes and you can't change it you have to put new hub only a spot of oil so may leave it for now, got a bit of play in front one do that first before lights come on.

Couldn't find any mention of sealent in works manuel but checked haynes and they mention sealent. Just ordered new hub and "lock and seal" liquid.

Have finished job now> I have replaced the hub assembly and hub o ring as I don't like going in twice. On stipping down I have found that the "locking, seal compound had broken down. The book says put a 3mm band of sealent round the half shaft. I have towed the caravan and done about 1000 mile with no further leaking.. Fixed . Thank for the help chaps:)
