Hi

I am living and working in Uganda and in the market for a good quality and most importantly reliable diesel 4x4.

My options are as follows

2000 Land rover Disco 2 TD5
1997 Land cruiser Prado 3.0 KZ-TE

I would like to hear from the "horses mouths" or so to speak.

Its important to keep in mind that I have no passionate love for any of the two vehicle, I am simply looking for the most reliable vehicle.

How reliable are the Disco 2 TD5's really

Regards
Leon

I know that this might sound bad as this is a land rover forum but I would say your more likley to find a reliable prado than you are a td5 I'm looking to by a td5 mysellf but it's obviously not as serious if it breaks down for me as it is for you. My father has prado and so do other members of my family had them for 5 years no problems so far. If I were you I would have the prado as you have no preferences. I'm sure there are plenty of very reliable disco 2 s out there and the td5 Is a good engine although the number one choice in countrys with harsh climates appears to be Toyota and nissan patrols hope this helps

I don't think, living in somewhere like Uganda, that I would consider a TD5. The difficulty finding someone capable of interrogating ECUs etc is probably far too difficult.

Something like a late 300TDi would be what I was looking for.

Here in the UK, owning a TD5 is not such a problem :)

If I change the options to the following would that make a difference

LAND CRUISER PRADO 3.0 KZ-TE
LAND ROVER DISCO 1 300 TDI
LAND ROVER DISCO 2 TD5

Cheers

My dad had a shogun, then a prado (import) and now has a p38 range rover. I have the Discovery TD5. The Prado was far superior to the shogun, and although all of these cars have been diesel the prado was the quickest. It was very reliable, but not as comfortable as the disco or Range rover. If it was me living where you do i would go for the Toyota, but where i live it has to be Land rover. A Toyota is a reliable car, a Land rover has a personality.

Hi I have owned both cars and allthough this is a landrover forum, I would honestly say the prado is better for you. Having said this the 200tdi/or 300tdi can be reliable cars too and may well be more capable offroad straight out the box then the prado. The td5 is a very good car but I would say without an enthusiastic approach will not be as reliable as a toyota. I have lived in Africa and Australia and have used and owned Pajero/landrovers/nissans and Toyota. I would say straight out the box you will get more reliability from the jap cars, but landrovers are extremely capable and have allot of personality!
