Hi i have a land rover discovery 2 td5 and when its in neutral and its ticking over its sounds as if there is a knocking noise coming from the gearbox and when u rev it, the sound goes faster, but when u apply the clutch it stops, also when getting into gear its really lumpy and hard , this has only happenend after i got a brand new clutch and flywheel put in to it.

I took it a land rover mechanic and he said it could be that there might not be the right oil in the gearbox and the pump is getting it tight,

Any help would really be great thanks

Who fitted the clutch and flywheel? I’d be taking it back to them pronto if it was fine before they touched it.

I suspect it has something to do with the clutch release mechanism, probably the fork, the bearing or the slave cylinder push rod are not properly attached. There are a few bits there, including plastics, that are rather fiddly to install. As to the flywheel bolts coming loose, I'm not sure if this is in RAVE but I've seen an LR document somewhere that says they need to be replaced. In fact, as a rule, any bolt that is angle torqued should always be replaced.

If it was a flywheel bolt wouldn't it still make a noise when the clutch pedal is depressed? Similarly if the the drive plate was fitted the wrong way around?
