can someone tell me what the small micro switch dose when the ignition key is pushed into the barrel.
I have been having problems turning the key and was wondering what its purpose was.

The barrels do wear. You can add graphite powder to give some lubrication but it eventually clogs up. If you can live with having different keys for the drivers door and the ignition, then the britpart barrel is cheap and works well. There is a fix involving taking the barrel apart but it was too fiddly for me. I doubt the microswitch would stop the key turning.

I'd also like to know all about this micro switch, never heard of it but I also have trouble sometimes getting the key to turn.

Key not turning is normally the gates are worn in the ignition switch barrel,

Either get a new barrel and key or do the work around reference removing the worn gates. A few good write ups on the web and not a difficult job.

Cheers

When it’s operated there will be the indication tone given indicating that the key is remaining in the ignition switch when the drivers door is opened, similar with the lights on indication. Simples
