Well the horn on my disco has packed in. It has been dodgy for a while but now its stopped working. How do I get to the switches on the steering wheel?. Don't want the air bag to go off

maybe im misssing something but its proball just your horn has given up no need to get at the button on the steering wheel unless you test the voltage coming towards the horn when u press the button and dont get a live could be a relay or a fuse if there is a live replace the horn unit itself :)

Dir u check the fuse and horn relay first?.....I mean F16(10A) and R13 in the engine bay fusebox. It's quite uncommon that both switches to fail......the feed for the horns goes through the rotary coupler too(under the wheel) .

If u decide to remove the airbag disconnect both battery leads 10 mins before u start

to remove airbags and get to the rotary coupler see this thread http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/steering-wheel-removal-127702.html

though i'd concentrate on the fusebox first

id have to say either the relay or horn as u say its been dodgy for a while

on discos do they have horns with a nut in the middle if so undo this and try your horn and try some wd40 on it if its a sealed type check for power at horn if not work back relay then fuse then steering wheel as easier to do these things

The Mrs has just told me it was working today. She uses the landy more than me, she said sometimes it works and sometimes it dosnt. Sometimes only 1 switch works. Baffled me!

Just been out to check it over, the horn works if I move steering wheel round whilst holding down the button. At some points it dosnt work and some points it does. Any ideas?

Is there anything I can do apart from replace it. Only started doing it since I fitted new steering box and was working steering wheel side to side to bleed it up

if it works on certain places but not others would more likely be the coupler try and source a second hand one but be sure to fit it propally as if it doesnt go on in the right spot will snap :)

Is it possible to get access to the contacts in the unit? Really cant afford to replace it yet. So I'm hoping that I can repair it

Might explain what happened?

If you let the steering wheel/column rotate while the box is off, you can 'overwind' the rotary coupler. That means afterwards, when you turn the wheel from lock to lock, it over-rotates and then breaks.

****e if that is what happened to you...

...........but, watching the diagram i dont see why the horns wouldnt work if u just bypass the rotary couper ...so the feed from the switch will go direectly to the relay.

See RAVE > electical library> connector views ....make a connection between the wires going from C1254-5 to C0082-5, IMO it will work......if u dont have RAVE i'll put the pics for u

Don't have rave mate. Laptops dead so I'm on smartphone. Also the steering wheel was locked when I took box off. I centralised it and locked it.

hope u can see this...connect the output of the switches to the wire on pin 5 of the C0082 connector

Is the output wire C0671? If not will the wires cope with the stress of the wheel turning?

that's a good point(i didnt think about that:eek:)...no C0671 is something else.....the input in the rotary coupler appears C1254-5 in the diagram but it doesnt appear in the connector views......the only chance is to identify the horn feed input and output on the rotary coupler's body and bypass it somehow.......hmmmmmm, looks more complicated that it was on first sight:mad:
