Hi,
can anyone give me an idea of my problem i have a discovery 2 with manual gearbox (R380) when driving everything seems fine. when i select 5th gear i get a nasty kind of noise kind of like a whining noise combined with a humming noise. i can hear it ever so slightly in 4th to but in 5th its very loud and as i increse in speed the noise gets louder but also sounds faster. It hasnt rearly come with any signs it was a little sound the other day but now its rearly bad any ideas would be appreciated.

Also if I'm looking at a recon box or repair any ideas on the best place to get one from.

Thanks in advance

When was the oil in the box checked last ?

Does the noise change with speed ?

Have you the cross drilled transfer box gear?
I'd be tempted to pull the cover off and look at gearbox output shaft etc

Hi,

When was the oil in the box checked last ? The oil was checked within the last 6months at service.

Does the noise change with speed ? You can here it start in 4th and more so in 5th, it does increase with speed, if you depress the clutch the noise goes away. In 1st, 2nd and 3rd all is ok.

Have you the cross drilled transfer box gear? No I don't think so.
I'd be tempted to pull the cover off and look at gearbox output shaft etc

Sounds like one of the gearbox mainshaft bearings is breaking up. Gearbox out I'm afraid.

What was oil like in gear box?
There's a small bearing between input shaft and front of mainshaft, that would fit some of your symptoms, but usually 4th gear change gets worse

Oil was low and topped up.

Have also googled and the results seem to say the same gearbox out and replace or repair.

Just need to find a replacement now
