First post go easy on me,
is there any sure way to check if my 2002 was a facelift model or just been modded in its history at some time

i would think checking the head light loom.
if real there wouldn't be any joints, if done retro, there would be a joint in the wireing harness.
i'm sure this is right, if not we'll soon know

have a look at the front pannel and loom if its been butchered its a pre face ....

It will be a 3A chassis number if it's a real facelift.

The clocks are different in the dash binnacle, all the switches are black and not ash grey. Theres loads of other bits aswell, but I cant think of them off hand.

As Pitcaig as said, the chassis number should start 3A.

Yep, the trim is black, not grey. Also the fuel filler flap release button was moved to the buttons near the door, not on the side of the clocks, no doubt because it's easier to reach when you have got out and forgot to push it.
