Hi there all you landy lovers, I am wondering what I can do in the engine to help improve its performance, starting and reliability. Any help would be greatly appreciated
It isn’t the best at starting straight away sometime two or three turns of the key. Also even when on cold the heater blows warm only in the drivers footwell. It has a few quirks that I amHello,
Wow , a big set of questions there.
First, give it a full service.
Second, I would suggest giving it a stage 1 tune.
Third, what is the issue with starting?
Cheers
Td5Is it a TD5 or v8 petrol??? Might help with the answers?
it turns over, but doesn’t start on the first time doing it. No dash issues and I’ve put a new battery in so I know that’s fine. I’m just seeing if there are any tune ups to it that will make starting more easy going than sounding like a OAP coughing before it does start. If it’s how the engine starts then that’s fine but if I can do anything to just give the engine a tune up to help easier starting then that’s what I am looking for.As the saying goes, "Plant the Christmas tree firmly and safely in its pot before hanging the baubles on it".
If you could give us a bit more info on the starting problem we might be able to help you track it down and solve it.
For instance, when turning the key, does the engine crank over or is there just a click? (The times when it doesn't start). If so it might be the contacts in the starter motor solenoid, common fault and threads on here to help you.
If not that, does the glow plug light on the dash light and then go out as it should?
Finally and this is common too, are you sure the batt is up to snuff, i.e. at 12.65 volts and are the connections to the terminal tight as they are stupidly designed and give trouble.
Best of luck!
It deffo does not need a "tune up" it needs sorting out.I

That’s what I’m after. I would mind doing a stage 1 on it but I’ll give a full service check injectors maybe clean them outIt deffo does not need a "tune up" it needs sorting out.
Mine starts without even letting the glowplugs go to their full term, first time, no coughing, no nothing.
And TBH it shouldn't really need the glowplugs, except in the depth of winter. So I suspect summat else, maybe an injector issue? As I have not had this problem I will let others comment, but it deffo is not right and needs bringing back to normal.
But DO pay attention to Sierrafery, no one loves his D2 more and he is very knowledgable about electrical issues. That’s what I’m after. I would mind doing a stage 1 on it but I’ll give a full service check injectors maybe clean them out
I will do, just want to get on and get it back to a good standard. It has been rather neglected before I got hold of it. Many things need doing. Luckily I didn’t pay the earth for it and actually was quite cheap due to being family owned. But DO pay attention to Sierrafery, no one loves his D2 more and he is very knowledgable about electrical issues.
Also getting the oil out of the plug and the ECM and even changing the injection loom is easier than friggin around with the injectors!
But that said, I had oil in my red plug and it didn't cause me the problem, but that means nothing as it HAS happened to others!
Just don't do what I did and drop the ECM. Whole pile of trouble if you do and the plugs can be stiff!
