Im pretty sure ive asked this before, and its something like a yes but the studs need to be longer on the casing????




but can anyone confirm or repute the fact that disco 2 diffs fit in the disco 1 casing?

Yep Ive blown another, and i wasnt even doing anything this time :(
 
its had a later diff housing fitted before sometime or someone just got the long ones as replacements for some reason

Cheers buddy, mine was previously fitted with a detroit locker in the rear so maybe it was something to do with that, at least it makes the change easier, the disco 2 td5 diffs are cheaper over here than the disco 1 diffs and freely available so it seems the way to go.

Maybe because the D2 diffs are worst made cos they dont last too long... i change one every two, max 3 years with new cos it gets worn and develops a play which will end up with a clunk on in a gear change (i'm using the correct oil and check the levels often) so IMO better not get used D2 diffs even if they are cheaper cos they are already sh*T or will be soon

they cant be there are the same diff same bearings etc,but with better carrier bearing cap locaters, its not a high rebuild unit, like the gearbox
 
Thanks, IMO the problem is that the pinions and the locking rings are wearing out not the bearings and then that backlash occurs cos there's no axial play in the diffs only that circular "backlash", on a new one i can't turn the flange more that lets's say 5 degrees left/right but after 2 years i can turn them all at least 20 degrees even more then i start to feel the backlash on gear change, if i wait more even that clunk... put new diff and all ok for a while... i have at least 6 diffs in my garage which have no other problem than that circular backlash in the drive flange, do you think that it's from the bearings?
 
Little update, the disco 2 diffs went in a treat without any hassle at all, look like slightly more refined castings and possibly stronger innards, time will tell.
