2 months ago the m and s lights started flashing ,stop engine restart and they would go out sometimes you had to restart it 2 or 3 times .3 weeks ago I couldn't clear them and had to drive 40 miles with them flashing, next time I started the car nothing relay clicking, fuel pump running, starter dead no click from solenoid ,small wire on starter no power,i can only start it with a wire from the red brown wire by side of relays to battery, starts straight away.

If the M+S warnings are still flashing it's possible that the XYZ switch to be at fault , it acts as "starter inhibitor switch" too , remove relay R2 and measure for voltage in the parallel cavities, if you dont get feed when you turn ignition to crank that's it...if you get voltage swap the relay..and check fusible link FL12

M and S lights have been reset on my mates hawk eye,xyz switch replaced 2 years ago, will check for voltages etc
try holding in the gearshift button and ragging the gear lever back and forth a few times. i had m&s lights come up, i did this and all fine now. apparently the xyz switch can get gunked up and stick, so it doesn't quite sit in the right position. might be worth a bit of spray lube as well.

Thanks Bobdog,I shall try all that, looks like its possibly the xyz switch, what is this?and where can I find it.
can I bypass all this.If I run a wire from tab 86 of the relay to earth I can start it normally on the key,or will I upset the ECUs

XYZ switch is the one that feeds the position of the gear selector into the ecu(s) IIRC its on the side of the gearbox at the end of the cable, but I may be barking up the wrong tree and it may be built into the selector in the centre console.

you can't bypass the XYZ switch. it's too complex, you can try to fix it or get a known good one as new is too expensive, the web is full of info, see from post #6 and beyond https://landroverforums.com/forum/d...e-switch-cost-so-much-how-best-replace-59323/

Would a hawk eye reader help to identify the fault and confirm if the xyz switch is faulty,Ihave plenty of things to check at the weekend everything mentioned in this posting is worth looking at.

Yes it would, it can be a fault code related to it stored in the transmission ECU or the selection can be monitored live with it

Are they easy to use,and which hawk eye is best I believe there are 2 models.if I send the car to the garage to be fixed it will cost possibly double of a hawk eye reader,£100 to go on the computer.the bills just go on and on.

It's quite human friendly but it seems that the "classic" hawkeye became obsolete cos on any search the hawkeye total pops up on bearmach site
