ok so I have a disco2 td5 auto 51 reg
what in your experience is the speed range per gear and the usual change speeds
just enquiring as some advise staying in 3rd for normal driving and wanted some advice as my autobox is a little temperamental - changes up if i back off the pedal but tends to stay in lower gear far too long in my opinion - no expert but have 2.7 merc auto that changes and runs at a lot lower rev range - so need some feedback from disco users

i work in KPH

but i can get all 4 gears from 0 to 55 kph very mild boost loads and very little acceleration percentage this = 0 to 34 mph
3rd gear lock up only locks in at 70 kph 43 MPH kicks out just under 50 KPH 31 mph
4th gear lock up is 80 kph 50 MPH and unlocks 70 kph 43 mph

but this all depends on engine load and throttle position if i start using more accelerator and more boost loads my gears to appear to be much longer
ps the only time i use the S mode on my transmission is when iam off road climbing a hill

as for the transmission being temperamental i can also relate to
when my Td5 is not in use for over a period of a few days when parked in the garage i flick my isolate switch that i have installed on the bull bar ....this is the same as disconnecting the battery..... this also helps to clear any bad habits that the ECU s has remembered

also if engine performance is poor also plays affect when the transmission changes gears

Change the gearbox fluid and while it's drained drop the sump and replace the filter. If the old fluid was black with a burnt smell them drop the new stuff out after a few days and put fresh in to get as much of the old stuff flushed out.
Check the drain plug for swarf.
If you still think something's not quite right then plug a diagnostic tool in and see what it gives.
Unless you're doing something like towing I'm not sure of any benefit gained by not leaving it in D for normal running around. Mine's fine like that in any sort of traffic, it's why I picked an auto box after all :)

why would staying in 3rd be recommended

Done that and will do again - there was a lot of discolouration but no major swarf on the magnet
need a cable for the Auto diagnostics connection as only got the main ecu cable for the Hawkeye :(

Thanks - I might try disconnecting the battery and see if this helps
 
Just changed my auto fluid had similar symptoms. when I drained the sump I only got 2.2 ltrs out. on refilling it took 4.8 ltrs. not had a test drive yet as its still on axle stands waiting a jet wash and chassis paint. I am towing a caravan this weekend and never towed auto before. is it a case of just put in drive and go or use 1,2,3 and d.

most do recommend so i also tried it out my self to see what the big deal is
i have found around town low speeds while towing where torque converter lock will never lock up in 3rd or 4th D is better i have all 4 gears

when negotiation some larger hills at a higher speed towing in D mode kick down may appear sooner this drops the transmission into 3rd gear with torque convertor slipping as its designed to do .....this also creates heat and wear as transmission do not like heat

i have found that towing in 3rd with TC lock up it pulls like a train insteads of the TC slipping ..its all down to negation and reading the road and desired speeds that your TC comes into play
 
I believe putting your lever in the "3" position makes the box change at slightly lower revs. I found my D2 TD5 auto far to "revvy" anyway so put the larger torc converter in. Was an expensive job but made huge difference to how the gearbox behaves.
