Hi all..did Discovery 1's have different length wheel studs ?, I have just bought some Freestyle alloys, got the right alloy nuts, mine currently has steels fiited, but when I come to fit them there doesn't seem to be enough stud to get some initial turns on the nut

can any one with freestyles fitted take a nut off and take a pic of how much thread is showing in the hole in the wheel ?

I have done a search and seem to get conflicted info on whether there were 2 lengths of stud

thanks all

Can't be sure without seeing the wheel you have, but some alloys have special nuts, rather than the standard ones.

RR Sport wheels have reduced shank and hexagon sizes compared with other nuts that fit the stud, like Disco 2 nuts for example, 22mm against 27mm Hex.

Possibly your wheel nuts aren't suitable to fit inside the wheel recesses and reach the threads?

i have 2 different sets of nuts for my steel rims and my factory alloy ones, they are not interchangable as the wont centre the wheel properly if you use the wrong ones
the alloy wheel ones are large with a 'shoulder' on and the steel wheel nuts are much smaller and have no shoulder, just a nut really

I can't say how much thread is showing and it's to cold and dark at the moment to undo a wheel nut, but the iirc the top of stud is just a few mm below the outer rim of the hole. all studs for steel or alloy as the same on a D1.
Post a pic of the wheel nut you have, i'll so tell u if it's correct. :)

Assuming you have the right nuts, are you sure you've got the wheel on fully?

My freestyles just slide on and the nuts are easy, but my mates 90 has freestyles and the first time we had them off they were a nightmare to get back on - until we cleaned the spigot faces up and applied even more copaslip...

Until the wheel is fully seated onto the spigot you'll struggle to get a nut onto the visible stud

yep they are defo the nuts I have...the short dumpy ones on my current steels and got a set of the ally one's with the chrome covers to go on the freestyles......

I have checked that the nuts defo go right into the alloys as I thought that was the problem but they sit right into the hole....its just that there is so little thread to start the nut on.....maybe I was just too damn cold and narked off.....will try again tomorrow

thanks all for the replies...I will let you know if I get em on tomorrow ;)

see my post above then!

...are there 2 types of nuts for alloy wheels ?? anyone got a pic of the other type if there is ?

Don't suppose you've got Disco 2 wheelnuts? they would be too large and would drop over the Disco 1 studs if you tried them on.

Just a thought, if you've picked up nuts separately.

thanks everyone for the help....my mate who knows his landies came over to help...the nuts were right...the alloys were being a biatch to seat on the hubs so after some copper slip and lots of man handling we got em fitted :clap2:

they look much better fitted than the old steels.....only problem was running up the arse of a Frontera that was parked like a prat in my street ................anyone in Surrey got a spare headlight for a 200 ? d'oh

I thank you... :D

usually loads of headlights on ebay, and 200 ones don't hold their value like the 300's that people normally want to convert to!
