Mine always been easy to bleed, start cold and take out the rad plug and heater hose plug.

Fill the header tank VERY SLOWLY until coolant comes out of the rad plug.

Place rad plug back in hand tight and start. Rad level should drop, slowly add to header tank until decent bubble free comes out of rad. Plug without letting air in ideally.

Then time to let it warm up, replace header tank cap and heater hose cap but regularly bleed hose cap until bubble free comes out.

Should be reyt now :)
 
Seems simple enough, thanks mate. Will be sure to have a very close look at the coolant system web I view the truck.
 
Do it !!!! Dont think about dont try to rationalise it either. Had the 300tdi and enjoyed it but i love my big v8. You get fast hatchback performance though they are a thirsty mistress. Keep her under 3000 revs and the mpg is comprable to the diesel. Plus the insurance is cheeper too. People get scared by the size and its petrol so the milage on them is generally low. Mine was 78000 miles for a t reg and cost £1300. Also the sweet music the engine and exhaust make brings a cheeky grin to my face every day. Do it do it do it. I love mine as you can see so i know you will feel the same why. Plus to avoid other drivers in little rollerskate cars qho dobt have the same skill the average land rover owner has its is perfect. Gets tou straight round and out of any trouble, something i have been thankful for many times where i live in newport and round south wales.
 
I may well get slaughter for this but if its cheap enough to buy , get a cheap single point LPG system on it , bish bash bosh 75p per litre on fuel and a you still get v8 power and noise :) i couldnt run mine if i had to fill it with petrol

Go for it! V8's are fantastic. It'll drink you out of house and home, but it's so much fun having something that sets off other peoples car alarms in Asda car park when you turn the ignition on!!

If they're REALLY bad they make a ticking sound but that's when they're almost loose in the block :D

Kind of just got to take it all into the equation, does it appear to be a tidy engine? Rad condition? Viscous fan condition? Oil condition? Header tank crusty or look like it is regularly refreshed? Any silicone around the inlet etc indicating recent work?

The problem with the big bore engines is it REALLY is a gamble.

Most are ok but you just don't know.

Try to explain to the seller that you are looking for a good motor so this requires extended testing/lots of looking etc.

I'm not personally sure if there is any actual concrete test for direct diagnosis of liner slip.
 
Even thought my 3.9 v8 is so thirsty I can't bring my self to sell it, cold mornings are where I appreciate it the most. Usually totally defrosted in 5 mins
I think mine is a little tired though as it doesn't Half know about it with a heavy trailer on the back
 
Well there's no danger of me taking one to 90mph, got the GTi for that lol

Will be subjecting it to a bit of heavy towing, 3-3.5 tonne from time to time. This made me consider a automatic for the first time.
Always had manuals as that's what I'm used to and tbh I think they are better offroad , I feel I have more control. Anyone else think the same?
 
I've got a 3.9 V8 auto (petrol only). On hilly and windy roads around the Lakes where I rarely get up to 40 mph I'll get 15 mpg. On a motorway (as long as I stick to 65 mph) I'll get 20 mpg. Towing a heavy cattle trailer halves the mpg!! Auto is fine and you can always drop it out of "D" to "3" or "2" if you need to.
Mpg is inversely proportional to fun!!
 
Auto is great and suits the V8. Drink holder is just the right height. Coffee to go or cold drink in summer. Steering wheel in other hand :)
 
I'm hoping the fuel consumption won't be too much of an issue as it'll be as second car. Plus add a lift and bigger wheels to a diesel and they aren't that great anyway.
Sure an auto will be OK, always seemed like a better combo with a V8 to me.
I think the only worry I have is making sure I can waterproof the engine, it'll be a weekend greenlaner and rescue vehicle so I don't wanna be breaking down. Especially with the current flooding that's happening round here.
 
The only way to fully waterproof is Megajolt or Megasquirt even better, as we have mentioned.

However, mine was VERY GOOD considering it was on a dizzy, but was not unstoppable by any means.

Was worse for condensation misfires than actually getting water in the dizzy! The only way to prevent that is constant breathing into the dizzy, if I was going to look further into it I'd be after 8mm bore breathers, one into the inlet pipe and one into the snorkel top.

Ideally you want plenum vacuum but it draws so much air through the dizzy it runs fast on it.

Would seriously advise Megajolt as a minimum, having got rid of the dizzy mate honestly if I did it all again it would be the first mod I make to the car, SO SO SO much time ****ing about with the old system over the years, sat in the garage, at the side of the road or in the middle of a pond.

Fit Megajolt/squirt and its a different story!
