My brother has a 96 300 Tdi ES manual and the speedo has begun to act up - sometimes doesn't work at all and at other times bounces up and down .
Any ideas on where to start looking appreciated .

I had the same problem last year when i had a 300 and i found it was a loos wire on the altinator...

Both of the above refer to the rev counter which picks up it's info from the alternator.
As it's your speedo that's giving you a problem that picks up the info from the vehicle speed sensor which is located on the transfer box casing so check the wiring plug there first.

Only four things to look at the electrical plug connections, the speed sensor and link cable or the speedo head itself.

Thanks for replies . As Discool said its the speedo that's giving trouble and I couldn't find any menton of a speedo cable .
There is a transducer it says on the transfer box - I presume it's where the cable used to come from but this device changes the turning movement into an electrical signal which is sent to the speedo head .
Is the transducer likely to fail intrmittently or would a bad connection be more likely ?

my disco tdi had the same problem i removed the speedo itself cleaned all the contacts and checked for any dry joints on the circuit board re-fitted the speedo and all has been ok since

My brother got under the Disco this evening and said all connections etc appeared to be fine - we were hoping for a loose connection or damaged wiring .
So maybe it would be worth his while to remove the speedo and check it out .
It's not too tricky a job is it - any thing in particurar to watch out for ?
Thanks .

Just to update - took the transducer out this evening and discovered that the short square bit that locates in the drive in the transfer box had in fact worn round . There was a tiny bit left square in near the transducer which showed what the rest of it should be like .
It was also loose and worn and no sign of lubrication - I would have thought oil from the transfer box would have kept it lubricated ?

So the problem has been found, well done.

The part no. for a replacement is AMR1253 Transducer Speed and the O-ring seal is 571665.

Thanks for that discool - part no on transducer was a bit smudged but that was what I made of it so good to know that's it .

hiya my problem just strted today is liky that the connection just needs a bit of wd 40 or is worn as above my just jumps around and went with no warning

That was how the problem started - would jump around for a bit and then work OK for a few days .
Changed the transducer and all OK since .
Would have a look at the transducer first - accessible from under the vehicle .

got this problem on my disco

garage have looked and said its the "speedo sensor on the gear box" is that the transducer/same thing ?

how much are they brand new ? or can i get one from a breaker ? looked on ebay and nothings came up, but im wondering what to look for excactly ?

i have one with an issue the speedo has just stopped the transducer is sending me a signal upto the clock. I bought a clock off ebay and its doing the same. any ideas??

I think your timex isn't working.

Good place to post 1st question though, in a 6 month old thread, I like your style.
