Hi all,
Thought I would share my Disco 1 camper build. Have been working on it now for a couple of weeks, and is basically finished now, aside from a few finishing touches.
Must give credit to ReadySalted, who did one earlier this year: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/discovery-1-home-made-sleeping-platform-camper-252670.html I used some of his ideas, and added some of my own. Pretty stoked with the result!
First job was building a drop-down shelf for the rear door
Next, starting to build the main unit. 12mm Ply was used throughout. At first I thought it might be too thin, but with all the bracing has ended up being very strong and sturdy.
4 upright supports run from the back to the front. The outside ones are fixed to the rear arches
Putting the dividers in place. They are adding separate storage compartments, and will also support the top piece.
Starting to fix the top piece with more L brackets - I used a lot of them! You can see on the RH side how there is enough room in the "pocket" for the Camping Gaz bottle.
It's finished! How it all sits when driving. The foam is 75mm high density and super comfy!
I up-cycled the old seatbelts for the rear shelf! Also you can see how the dimensions were made to fit the crates at the back we'll use for storage or various things. They are 2 crates deep on both sides.
Behind the crates compartment, is a separate compartment on both sides that can be accessed by 2 folding parts of the top
There is heaps of storage space!
More storage in the front section! And you can see it all comes together for sleeping - 1. move and tilt seats right forward, 2. Fold out the "extensions" of the vertical uprights on each side, 3. lower the front-top piece right down
4. Insert the final foam strip in the folding gap, then you have a flat, 6 foot sleeping platform - happy days!
