Duff viscous fan?

should still be driveable, we recently used the our 110 to move with 21 ft trailer with about 2 tonne on it from thurso to lockerbie (so lots of lovely scottish hills!) .. no fan at all!

got hot on some of the climbs but fine otherwise

might be the impending sign of trouble....

is the waterpump ok?
 
Well keeping the heater on has kept her cool. To be honest I think we have a combination of duff fan, duff rad and poor water pump. So I'm going to change the lot. Finished journey now so only way back to do and for that if she boils again it's recovery truck time.
 
Cooling system not pressuring until she actually boils rest of the time she is fine. She also had a new Hg 3 or 4 weeks back. Hopefully that's hasn't gone again but she isn't showing any symptoms bar overheating randomly
 
If it's any consolation, mine did the same when towing a caravan. Local independant LR place did head gasket, it still overheated. They took it back, did it again and skimmed the head, full works, pressure tested etc etc .. it still overheated. Eventually they took the viscous fan off and saw the back of the radiator was all blown out. The front looked new, the rear was almost completely gone, so not only was the coolant heating up, so was the oil!

New rad, all fixed .. simple as .. We came to an arrangement over costs .. ;)
 
Mine's the other way around. Front of rad has no fins back looks not brilliant either. Towing home and it didn't misbehave as long as I had the heater on. 35 miles towing a twin axle car transporter with a car on the back temp gauge didn't rise once . I'm pretty sure this confirms either rad or fan. The viscous fan doesn't fell to bad but the rad is definitely not happy
 
you should have pressure in the system normally btw. is your cap knackered?
you checked the top hose to make sure stat is opening?

you can test the visc with a rolled up paper

is the rad warm all over?
 
rad caps a good point she was blowing out water through the cap when she boiled but normally cap cam be removed without so much as a hiss. Rad I can't really get my hand in to feel properly but it's definitely not hot all over. Stat is definitely opening can feel coolant flowing in top hose

you need a new cap.

coolant system should be under pressure.. not much about 15psi.

it does this to raise the boiling temperature, like a pressure cooker

edit: so this could cause the engine to overheat btw

Have you managed to source a rad?
Best place around this area (Aberystwyth) is Bedw Services, Julian Bird 01974 241457. He might have a used one or he can probably get a new one, Allmakes or Bearmach (doesn't deal with Britpart), within a couple of days. Cash or cheques only.
If you're further south then have you tried Hannaford P Hannaford Landrovers - For all your Land Rover Parts and Services in Wales. Only ever used him once but he was very helpful when alternator went on way down to Cardiff a couple of years ago.
 
Thanks decided to go for a new rad rather than 2nd hand for piece of mind and im also going to replace every part of the cooling system that looks even slightly suspect. I really hate cars that overheat with a passion!

Im based near Lampeter so will use one of the motor factors that ive got a trade account with to get the bits. Oh and for anyone in the area that doesn't know motorworld in Lampeter now stocks a good selection of parts and will order in most parts for you if not in stock, there prices aren't too bad either if you have a trade card.

In case anyone is interested this is what I was pulling back.

With the heaters on for the journey the only thing that overheated was me the car stayed fine. On the way up with the heater off she boiled with that trailer unladen
 
LOL, maybe the Daf on the trailer improved the aerodynamics .. :)
 
Hopefully my overheating problem is now sorted. Brand new rad in place, new thermostat, given the engine a full service, new rad cap, replaced the plastic bungs with brass ones, and I have a new waterpump that would have gone on if I could have got the pulley bolts to undo. Got to get some irwin rounded bolt removers to change water pump. To be honest I don't think she really needs a new waterpump as there was good waterflow and no roughness in the bearings. I'll will change it in due course though as I have a brand new genuine part here ready to go on.

Incidently my old radiator was well past its best. Front side had next to no fins left and the rear side all the fins turned to dust and fell out when I lifted it out so having a new radiator has got to help things.

nice, keep an eye out for leaks since you've been running with no pressure due to the cap
