Hello everyone, my first post on here so be gentle.

First off , Iā€™m new to Land Rover and only have basic mechanic skills, but always willing to learn.

i brought my truck a couple of months ago, the first couple of weeks no issues and very happy with it, then one morning pulled up to a round about and the engine stuck on max revs, grey smoke everwhere. I turned the ignition off and the engine stopped.
I let the engine sit for 10 mins and started it back up and it was fine and fine until the next episode a couple of weeks ago.

I had a day on Salisbury plains and all was well apart from the last hour or so, when I dropped the revs to slow down my truck would stall? I ended up getting a tow home as thought the lift pump was failing.

I decided to give the truck a set of filters and an oil change and lift pump , no problems there and my truck started first time and ticking over nicely. I went for a test drive to see if it would stall, however only 200 m from home my truck accelerated on its own, I pulled over and switched off the ignition and it carried on running on max revs for about 20 seconds and loads of smoke?
i waited as I did before and started it again and immediately the revs took off to maximum. Switched off and over ran yet again and loads of smoke. I had it stall it to stop the engine running.
I have taken off the top intercooler pipe and the air intake from the turbo and both very oily.

I have been scratching my head since, any ideas please.

sorry for the long post , thanks in advance.

It sounds like your engine is running on its own oil, which can lead to a runaway engine from what you describe. This can lead to complete engine destruction and also it's a fire risk.
Either your turbo seals are leaking oil into the engine's air inlet or your valve stem oil seals are no longer working.
One thing you can do to narrow down the problem is to disconnect the boost pipe from the inlet manifold and run the vehicle again (very carefully). If the engine revs don't take off and there's no smoke then it's most likely your turbo. If this is so you could check that the turbo oil drain pipe is not blocked/restricted. If it still demonstrates the problem then it's your valve stem oil seals.

Sounds like several diesel runaways. You are fortunate that it stopped before total destruction.
I doubt if your engine has survived that without any damage, but you might have got lucky.
As they say"""""", first thing to do is to try and find out how the engine oil is getting into the engine, and stop it.
There can be several causes, turbocharger, crankcase pressure, oil level rising in the engine.

Tempted to suggest that it is a judgement on you for calling your Landrover a truck, but maybe you have suffered enough! :D

Bet you 50p you put to much oil in it.
The dipsticks are utter dogshti, ignore any ref to oil quantity, they all quote dry fills, ie the amount a brand new totally bone dry engine takes, top of my head you wont want much more than 5 litres for an oil change, then after running it until the oil light goes out, you need to leave the thing standing for hours to get an accurate reading form the dipstick.
