Hi all,
What are your thought on this?? I'm completely :confused:
Originally I had my heart set on a defender but then I drove it, I always knew they would have a bit of an "agricultural feel" about them, but I've driven a few of them recently with the hopes of buying them but they just felt a little bit too much like a trackor! I'm gutted cause I've always wanted one!!! :( My second choice would be a classic range rover...... a little bit more comforts in it but I'm wondering about using it as my daily runner? Running costs etc. Would I need a tool box with me with every journey?
Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated!! (I'm still not giving up on the defender idea.....maybe I just need to up my budget and go for a newer model....would this change the agricultural feel or did they change at all over the years??

My daily driver is a '93 LSE RRC. I've put nearly 100,000 miles on the clock in 4 years. I paid $500 for it. Find one of those.
 
They are great off road as well. But here's the caveat, I live in the high desert in the United States, so rust is not the issue that it is for you. :(
 
I have a 3.9 v8 rrc love it drive it most days tow with it not to bad on fuel so long as driven gently drive it like you stole it and watch fuel gauge go down and its very comfy but the ninty is better off road

A V8 in Ireland!!! No chance!! It would unfortunately have to be a diesel for me at the moment, I couldn't possibly afford a v8 petrol engine in a jeep!! I wish!! Maybe LPG conversation? I have done much reading up about them yet, but I've seen a few topics on here so I'll take a look and see :)

Try a Discovery, cheaper than Defenders by a LOT, like a late D2 TD5 is half the price of a Defender TD5
 
I have a 1964 Series 2a and a 2014 110 Utility Defender... the only difference is more plastic in the 110 and slightly comfier seats (oh and luxuries like heated seats, air con, a stereo you can just about hear) If you don't like the defenders you've driven so far, chances are defenders aren't for you i'm afraid.

:eek: Guilty as charged!!!

Saw a very funny email yesterday on a similar topic.... it was an old Batman and Robin cartoon with batman slapping Robin after Robin said to him "I like your new Jeep Batman", to which Batman replied "its a Landrover not a Jeep" .....and slapped him! :D:D:D

Anybody know what the Discovery TD5 conversion onto an old chassis are like?

I was going to say the very same thing, a Discovery 1 would be the perfect compromise.

I've had a few Discovery's, but the best was a 1997 1.5 3.9 V8i

One of them running on LPG would be the best all round Land Rover for me.
 
Drove a 300TD today and it felt completely different (in a good way!) to the 200TD :)..... so the dream of a Defender is alive again!!! :D:D:D
I think it must have been the others that I drove were just very bad examples. Dear Santa...... ;)

While they have rediculously heavy clutches, this is down to the pedal spring which can be replaced for a gentler return spring from and LR Stealer

Go onto YouTube & enter 'Hitler's Land Rover' if you want a really good laugh. The video goes back five years & I thought it had been taken down (at the request of LR maybe!) but it's still there. As for your dilemma, the choice is between a tractor & a true classic car that is all things to all men, but check EVERWHERE for rust & go for the V8 auto. Keep away from LPG if it's a 3.9/4.2 - if you can't afford to run it on petrol, then revert to the Defender option.

For that budget go Disco TD5 or find a 300 TDi that has had ALL the work done and you will still have a few £££'s left over.
