Hi reference si844's problem with transfer box. I have just bought a '98 disco and discovered that the difflock doesn't work. You CAN select high low box but you can't move the shift sideways to select difflock. Any ideas:confused:

They are usually like that due to lack of use.

Try be a bit firm with it - if it doesn't shift then either attack from above or below with WD-40. and work it !!

Search the forum on this one, there's tons of stuff and a good external link.

Much of the time the sideways slidey thing has rusted up. Easiest way to get access is to remove the centre console and drill out the rivets on the rubber thing underneath. Obviously you'll need a hand riveter to put it back properly. I've done this myself on a 200tdi and it's dead easy.

I think some people have got good results by doing everything from underneath the car though - try the easy way first i.e. WD40.

As Woot says, the easiest and best way (imo) is to go in from the top.

It's not difficult or complicated to remove the centre console, underneath that is some sound absorbing foam that you just lift out .

Under that is a rubber membrane held in place by a metal frame which is either rivetted or screwed in place, remove that and you will see the top of the transfer box mechanism.

I found lubricating with grease and then working back and forth did it for me, but if it doesn't try WD-40 or similar, then work it.

Once free coat with grease to ensure good working and protection.

dont forget once a week slip it into low then difflock and back again
and just drive a few feet or so . this will keeps things from getting stuck again
