Recently bought a Defender to play with, one of the problems being that the difflock light isn't!
Ok, although the difflock is working fine, the light isn't working at all.
so, like a good little Boy Scout, I've done a "search" and checked out all the post relevant to this.
I've checked the bulb (& swapped them about) = no problems here!
I've checked the fuses, = again no problems.

Now I've got most of the floor panels out to have a go at the switch........Hello!, what have we here? there is only the earth wire attached to the switch, no feed wire from the light at all! no bloody wonder it doesn't work!

So, can anyone point me to where I should be looking for this wire? (nothing obviously dangling down) which bunch of wires does it emerge from? what colour is it? or can anyone point me to a wiring dia on the net?

Awaiting your words of wisdom.

Jim

As posted by Western on lr4x4:

"expose the wiring on the top of RH chassis rail adjacent to the gearbox & find the Black/Blue trace wire, that's feed to the warning light on the dash panel, other end of switch should be earthed."

Well I've found the wire, had been cut off, and what's left was hiding up in the loom near the steering shaft!
Obviously some previous mechanical monkey had forgotten to fit it before putting the g/box fully up when changing the clutch or something, knowing that the previous owner wasn't going off-road, decided that he'd never notice if it didn't work at all!
Anyway, made up a new wire, only to find that the switch was knackered!
New switch ordered.
1 more question (although i'll go search for the answer as well)
When the new switch fitted, if it "makes" when in lock, is it garentee'd to "unmake" when out of lock? ie. is there enough "down-ramp" or do you have to fiddle with just how far it's screwed in/out etc. (bit of a bugger if you do!)

.........going searching..................

Aye, it does need adjusting. Mr Grunt has posted several times about how exactly to do this, so do a quick search - he was even nice enough to include pictures ;)

On another note, the difflock light might not go out immediately when the lock comes out if there has been a bit of transmission wind-up - just reverse up a few feet and it should extinguish.

i aint read it - but if yu reckon its a good rite-up then i spose representation could be made to the "Gods" - ie Si an Slob. the more of these things that are "good" that are made stickies the fewer "wot tyres do i need" type posts we mite get....

just my 2p's worth

How did yer get into the gallery bit Fiver, it won't let me in. Buster had some better pics than me an his freds on the switch had more info in them. You'd be better off setting the switch up with a multimeter. An yer link dunt werk Buster.

No, it won't let me in either!
right, got the new switch in, with a mulimeter looked to be working ok, put the wires on, again everything looks ok, but all the bloody panels etc back on, and the buggers not working at all! bastard!!!!
Will have to go and give it another little turn me-thinks!

Gallery seems to be working fine for me. It always does at work. Betcha when I get home I can't get on though...

Says in the landy manual that you connect Test light to one side of switch, Engage diff lock, screw switch in till light illuminates then turn a further half turn then tighten up lock nut and all should be well.
Barring the law of sod that is
