The second problem on my 110 CSW 300tdi - starting!
I've just posted a thread on a brake problem - See here

She's never failed to start, but the first start of the day is always an issue!
She takes a good few turns to start and once she's started she's fine.
However, this appears to be getting worse!

Once she's eventually started the first time, she has very little power, doesn't rev well and will eventually cut out with about 30 seconds to a minute of starting. Then she'll start again, a little easier than the first time and will rev up fine and run fine.

I've replaced the glow plugs but that hasn't done anything.
Turning on the glow plugs 2 or 3 times before starting the engine doesn't make any difference either.
There is white smoke coming out of the exhaust on the first start but that soon clears.
Once started and having been run for a few minutes she will start up no problem.
If left for an hour or so it can still take half a turn or so before she'll start up, but once started there are no problems.
The previous owner also replaced the battery so I don't think it's that.

So, does anyone have any suggestion?

Check the injector fuel leak-off lines, as well as the copper washers on the banjo bolts that attach them to the injectors.

Well known for either the fuel line perishing or copper washers failing which introduces air/fuel leaks. This means the fuel drains back if left for a while and causes hard starting and rough running for a wee while. Once it's run it's usually fine for the rest of the day, until the next morning.

I've been reading about the fuel leak off pipes, not heard about the copper washes though. As they're cheap it cannot hurt to put new ones on.

I'll let you know how I get on.
A friend has her at the moment, he knows more than I do and said he'll look at a few things.

Thanks

Im gonna start mine up tomorrow if I can. Will post a video of me doing so on here. Will also try copper washers later this week.

Hi mate i have the same problem on my 300 it used to start on first turn no matter what then i had the ve pump messed with (advanced) and it has never been the same since white smoke when it does fire up i think its unburnt fuel

Lift pump could be on the way out - mine suffered with fuel draining back which took a while to turn over and start

New lift pump sorted

My friend still has her at the moment, he's not had chance to work on her so still in the dark.
The suggestions have taken on though and I'll let you know how we get on.

Thanks

Neil

I got her back over the weekend from having the timing belt and a few other things sorted, including the leak offpipes.

Even though the leak off pipes were replaced, there was no major difference to the start, it still took a couple of turns.

However, I filled her up last night for the first time since owning her and she sarted first time this morning! She was left for about 2 hours at the train station and again she started first turn!

So, could a full tank of diesel make a difference?
I know it's a little warmer than recent weeks, but it's no warmer than November when I bought her and she was struggling to start then, with three quarters of a tank!

Any thoughts?

Also, confirm your glow plugs actually work, the wiring or relay might have gone.

Apparently the plugs work, but once I've got the meter to measure I'll double check.

There are a few electrical issues I hop to resolve, such as the 12v supply at the cigarette lighter and the internal lights coming on when the doors open, I also plan to install a second battery for leisure use.

Just updating my threads following some work that now appears to have helped the starting issue I had.
Starter motor packed in last week and a reconditioned LR starter has now been fitted.
She still has a fuel leak at the back, but with the new starter the start up is so much better.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, much appreciated.
