Hi
I own a S reg freelander petrol.
Has anyone looked how the diff is suspended? There are 3 rubber bushes holding the diff. Has anyone had to replace these? If i get hold of the inboard CV joints i can move the diff in every direction. Not a massive amount but it looks a bit alarming. Also the back of the prop shaft has been marking the underneath the tunnel. Iam going to replace these bushes as i suspect they are past their best. Has anyone had this problem. Also iam experiencing a noise what sounds like bad road noise and is noticable more on really smooth roads. It doesnt get any worse when i turn either way. Ive had new tyres fitted and all balanced. Its driving me nuts. Cant see anything wrong underneath apart from the 3 bushes? Its done 60K and been faultless up to now? Any ideas please?
 
Sounds to me like the bushes are well worn, you should not get the type of movement as you say, first port of call. . .
 
It will be the rear diff bushes, my wifes car 02 TD4 with 30k had the top one fail and it was replaced in 20 minutes under warranty, no more noise.

If your doing DIY then as Ming has said change them all, the parts are cheap its just the labour involved.

yes i think the centre prop bearings would be the issue there as its a rotational noise,

the worn diff mounts will cause knocking when pulling away and its usually the front diff mount that fails causing diff to lift and rub on fuel tank cradle.
to check this see if you can lift the rear of the prop towards the tank if so it needs replacing

Thanks for the info. Iam going to order the 3 bushes and fit them this weekend. I will let you know if it cures the noise. Butty
 
Butty. . . if ya gonna d i y on these bushes, then make sure you do not undo the bushes without support on yer rear diff , know this might sound silly if your used to these jobs, but do not put a weight strain on the main prop as this could cost ya, just a bit of info, but if you knew anyhow, wasn't trying to sound big , just a tad concerned. . .:)
 
Hi - I seem to have a similar problem but dont have the time or knowledge to do it myself. Does anyone know where will fix this for me without getting ripped off - I live in Glasgow / Lanarkshire.
Any help appreciated.

most probably any garage will do this and it should only take average mechanic 1/2 an hour to do so labour charge sould not be that expensive,

Changed the bush as suggested, but the noise is still there. Iam going to change the prop centre bearing?
