I've been thinking lately about engines.

I've heard of van motors being fitted by owners, but I was wondering if anyone has swapped the oe motor for one from a small truck? Something of the nature of the Iveco/Ford, Renault or Mercedes 7.5 tone motor?
A 4ltr 4 cylinder Hi torque seems like it might be a good conversion for a long trip with a trailer for instance.

Do they even fit????

It's not something I have any reason or intension of doing, just interested.

Just about anything is possible. Craziest I have ever seen was the unit from a Jensen Interceptor a 6.3 ltr big block V8, Comes down to cost and putting up with the aggro to get it working right.

Most engines are not sealed to the extent of the Land Rover options. This might not be a problem, depending on what you want to do. Many have the cam belt just behind a plastic cover - enough to protect from fingers, but not a great idea for deep wading!

when i was in the Falklands in 87 the army were selling off lands for silly money and the islanders were buying them to change to diesel engines from bits of army kit they also bought.

it was cheaper for the army to auction kit off than bring it back, we jettisoned loads into the falkland sound

I have one of these in my 90. No chain or belt. All gear driven and its a boat engine so to be fair it should be good wading. Mercruiser and BMW also use this engine sold under licence. Something different too

I have a VM 2.5 diesel 4 cylinder in the 110 project. Ex Range Rover and apparently rebuilt. I was going to weigh it in, but perhaps too hasty? Or is it just too old for any interest?

Personally I think they're a decent motor, but most will shy away because of more expensive repairs than a 2 or 300tdi and the fact they had cooling issues in the RRC's. If it isn't broken id run it until it dies and stick in a tdi. If you do decide to get rid though ill buy the flywheel housing and starter off you

OK, will let you know if I decide to rip it out. PO says that with the added intercooler and tweaking it was as good as the tdi, but he would, wouldn't he?

All the best
