I live and work in Kuwait, I own a 1987 Land Rover Defender 90 V8, The last owner of the Defender change both axles with 2007/8 Land rover Discovery axles. I don't know for sure, but i believe that year model(08/7) has a higher Diff gear ratio, because 1st feels like I'm starting in 2nd.

Is this true?

Do i need to change out the hole diff or just some gears?

If i need to change the hole diff what should I be looking for?

I would like to get this close to Factory specs for off roading

Thank you

I think all the diffs are the same maybe the po has fitted a disco transfer box.
Google defender diff ratios and see what come sup.

Most probably a discovery transfer box. I believe they have a ratio of 1.2:1 instead of 1.44:1. Check that first and tell us what you find.

Im going to check tomorrow but you may be right. If it is a Disco Transfer Box, how would i fix it? Is it as easy has just changing some gears or do i have to change the hole transfer box? Does the disco have locking Diff?

Yep has same as defender just different ratio gears, best to change whole transfer box.

I'm the other way around, I have the original transfer box and want to swap it for the Disco box. I figure it would make it more comfortable on the road and if I keep the Defender low ratio gears it keeps it's ability off road.

thought some one had done well to fit disco 3 axles to def,if you give t/box number i could tell you parts that need changing from 1.2 -1.4 ,all discos use 1.2 t.box except mpi which used 1.4 ,some just need hihg gear and intermediate gear others need input as well not hard to do but obviously if you have 1.4 to hand easier to swap

as disco till they went borgwarner except 3speed auto which is 1.003 ,then 1.2 defenders have 1.4 tdi od 1.6 n/a 1.2 v8 90 which is 29d--- or 32d--. 1.6 20d-- .1.4 22d--- 25d---- lt85 gearbox
