disco 300tdi,had timing belt done 2 weeks ago,now noticed a whine which gets louder as i accelerate, could it be the diff,i need to get to lancashire on sunday (from newcastle)dont have another car, would it be safe to drive until monday...thanks in advance...
not sure to be honest mate, never checked the rev counter as im accelerating, but it does get louder as i accelerate, happens more from cold,if that makes a difference.

the noise goes away when i take my foot off accelerator, doesnt seem to happen as much when the engine warms up either??
all oils are ok too, bookrd it in to my local indy on monday,so we"ll see, thanks for the replies...
looks like i might be looking to get a recon front diff, the local indy dropped the oil and found lots of loose metal, redone all my oils, axle, diffs and gearbox, quoted me nearly £400 for a recon diff and 2 hours labour, thatll be nearly £500,if i new which diff i needed i could do with changing it myself,no clue though, its a 1997 300,any ideas guys?
lots ,any 24 spline diff from defender disco 1 or rrc would do ,recon £200 is more real price, diff can be changed with brake pipes etc left connected just undo 7 bolts per side and pull out enough so that half shafts are pulled free of diff and support wheel staion so brake flexis not strained, reseal axle ends using silicone sealant after ensuring surface is oil free, a 3 bolt flange rear diff could be used if your flange and spacer swapped over £50-£100 for second hand diff
only does it when im driving,it sounds like its winding up on acceleration, then winding down when i take foot off pedal, the indy dropped the diff oil and said it was very metallic, and the last service(somewhere else) they had put atf in the diff, wrong viscosity im told,so he put ep90 in and changed all other oils as a matter of course,he said drive it and see how it goes, got a diff from a mate, but dont want to change it incase it aint that......diff bearings possibly!!!
does sound diff related now.
change it before the current one goes bang, if it dont cure
it then its summat else out of the equasion. assuming the
second hand unit is servicable.
fok that... get one off ebay and change it yourself....dead easy to do it.
take prop off, unbolt the diff, take it off, bolt new one back on.
to take prop off you have to jack one wheel up and spin it so you can get to the nuts holding the prop to the diff nose, you can get to the top ones, but there's no room to get to the bottom nuts, so you have to spin the wheel to make these stay at the top.
i would also advise on getting one of these, makes life easier to get the prop nuts off
got a diff to go on,ive also got to pull half shafts out enough to disengage from diff and take steering bar off as the bracket for the damper is attached to the diff casing...............
