Why is there a metal cylinder in one of my diffs but not the other?

Also how much is too much metal gunk on the magnetic plug? I had no large pieces, maybe a few half mm bits, but a lot of filings and magnetised oil.

Pics might help:)

Are you actually talking about “inside” and looks different from normal?

Maybe a LSD/ATB or locking diff of some sort.

I would wonder if it is a broken split pin from the adjustment collar. See piccies. Either way I would be pulling the diff to see what the issue is.

Pic sent. What’s a LSD/ATB please?

I thought you had removed the diff as well, mis understood it actually came out on the plug.

I can only see it being similar to what nelly has pointed to. Does it look broken at 1 end? Even so if it is then you need the diff out I think.

Would agree if broken, but seems complete. It’s almost as though it was supposed to be there. There was also about 10mm of gunk and oil on both front and rear mag plug. Is this usual for 100,000?

If it’s original oil in the Diff then that amount of gunk is to be expected at 100k. I’ve seen worse.....
If the pin has been sitting on the Mag Plug for a long time it will have become magnetised itself.

IMHO @neilly is spot on, had the same in my last D2 - no idea how/why it snapped but the piece normally visible/protruding had sheared leaving about 1/3rd in place. Only discovered when fitting a locker, so performance had not been noticeably affected - maybe lucky as I’m sure it’s supposed to be there at the original length for a reason.
