might seem like a stupid question but with the sunny weather here and a dales run on the horizon i was wanting to change the diff oil as i do not know when it was last done so how do you change the oil is it as simple as undoing the bolt that is facing you when you look at the diff to drain it and refill it :eek:
 
Take car for a run to warm oil. On level ground. First clean around drain and level plugs. Remove level plug in back of diff. Remove drain plug in bottom of diff. Allow oil to flow out into suitable container. Refit drain plug with a smear of sealant. Fill through level plug until oil begins to flow out. Replace level plug again with a smear of sealant on threads. EP 80/90 gear oil.
 
As above but do make sure you can remove the filler plug before you drain the oil as if you cant get it open, you cant refill!
 
Pretty simple, undo the filler plug first (you dont want to drain out to find the filler plug is seized). Undo the drain plug & drain fluid into container. Replace drain plug after cleaning the magnet - if you have alot of swarf on the magnet all may not be well, had to replace my rear diff recently & the magnet was covered in swarf. Fill with EP (about 1.5L for re-fill). Check level until it is level with fill hole. Refit filler plug.....simples.

There should be two plugs, one at the bottom and one further up the diff housing. Undo both to drain through the bottom. Reinstall bottom plug and fill through the other hole. This hole also serves as a level indicator - level is correct when oil just drips out the bottom edge of this hole.
 
thanks for the replies the plugs came loose with minimum of fuss the oil was disgusting so pleased that i changed it you all get a gold star for the quick response and advice :D thats another job of the list greased the prop and ujs while it was on the ramps :)
