Hi,

I have seen a few discos with diff locks in the front and rear axels.

Probably a stupid question, but I'm assuming you can get similar difflocks for defender axels?

Thanks

Hi
Yes you can as disco axles are effectively the same as the defender ones so discovery locking diffs would it defender axles as long as you have the right number of splines. As well as locking diffs you can also get limited slip diffs I think Ashcroft sell both but very pricey you'd be able to afford another Land Rover to tow you out for the price of diff lockers.

When funds allow I was going to get an Ashcroft LSD, cheaper than a whole active locking diff set and should be suitable for my needs.

Yes, they are available for almost all diffs! :)
I have had a few kinds over the years, and they are fantastic if you are off-road a lot, specially if it is very slippy.
There are many different types, some you activate from the cab, as required. Usually either by air, or by electric switching. They are good, because you don't use on hard surfaces, so no effect on road handling.
Some others are there all the time, but release mechanically to permit cornering. They are better for vehicles that spend a lot of time off road, and need no activation system eg Air compressors or electric switching.
Try forum search ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ . Limited slip diffentials too! ;)

Got Detroit myself, trutrac in front, love em!;) If I was getting them now, I would look at Ashcroft, they seem to get very good write ups. :)

:D good news! I thought ~£600 for essentially a brand new diff and LSD fitted wasn't too bad! Plus I have a spare diff lying around :D

cool, thanks for the info guys ... i'm still umming and arring about whether to get a disco or a defender :s

Decisions decisions!!

A Defender won't lose any value, in fact only likely to increase in value if you look after it well, Defenders look better (obviously this is down to personal preference), and Defenders are just better at offroading (which clearly is important to you if you're looking at diffs).

However... Disco's are comfy, cheaper and friendlier as a daily commuter.

It is all down to what tickles your fancy and what your needs are.

Thanks, that's an interesting point about them holding their value. If it was down to me I would defo get a 90, but I have a better half and 3 kids to consider too. Maybe I should sell the freelander (although I was thinking about turning it into a rally car lol) and get both a disco and a 90 :s

Could get a 110, plenty of space for the family. Or get both.

I paid £8k for my 90 insured for £11,500. Thats some decent appreciation, whether I would actually get that or not ive no idea lol

Yeah, you could spend a bucket load modifying a Disco, or you could get a vehicle that can do everything without any mods :D

The way I always looked at it, remember the Camel Trophy? - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel_Trophy

Even when the Camel Trophy had progressed through the years and started using Discovery's (And Freelander's) as the main vehicle (so Landy could try and promote them as an off-road vehicle), what do you think the support vehicle was for when things got really tough and the Disco's and Freelanders got into difficulty? You got it... It was a Defender!

Proven track-record :D

Some do :)
and I would probabably cruise past you with double maxi drive diff lock, but I wouldnt , I would help a fellow landy driver out and give you a tow :D

Re OP there is a whole range of traction aiding things available, you need to search for diff locks, lim slips, torque biasing, and then work out which best suits what you intend doing .
