If I need a new rear and centre diff, what are good well priced options for getting lockers put in. I've been told to avoid air lockers.
 
Depends what your doing. Horses for courses, lockers are great if it fits the purpose, don't buy them to go laning.

Rear difflocker about 500 quid. Only really worth it if you drive on greasy stuff a lot, ie at least every week.
Nothing wrong with airlockers, compressor and airlines can be a bit fiddly. Best locker for occasional use. I have Detroit, but my use is mainly farm work.

Im currently looking at an ashcroft air locker. Currently have an arb in the front just I'm going to move that to the rear and put the more reliable arb in the front simply so I don't have to pull the front out to change seals anymore. Depends what you do. At lockers do good for the price

Also a diff is made of more than one part, a locker is only the diff centre. It won't fix what else might be broken though.

As for what's good, depends largely on budget, use and what other upgrades you may want.
 
I've heard Detroitare good. What did they set you back?

About a grand with the LSD in the front as well. But that was assembled on diff units, I still have the standard units in the shed, ready to go back if needed. And it was seven years ago.

Detroits are fairly agricultural on the road, especially if driven hard on corners.
 
I've had now 4 sets from Ashcroft absolutely brill. Worked a treat on a ****ty storm In morroco and in Lake District. ARB expensive and not as good, just get them fitted correctly unless you know what your doing. The only thing I would say is fit the ARB compressor which is the best in its class and can help you with other things.

On a short 6 mile journey, stopped at some traffic lights, went to move off at green and clunk followed by a whirring sound and we were not moving.
Tried every gear, in hi/lo with locked diff and still no drive just same noise.Handbrake (which is normally quiteeffective) did not work, so called the RAC to get us out of the 5 lane junction.
When we got home safely i got the helpful chap to have a look underneath while I tried her in drive again. He said the front prop was not turning, but the rear was but I had no drive at all.

Last year I had a reconditioned G suffix gear box put on with new clutch so I'm doubtful it's the gearbox. Possibly the transfer box, centre diff or rear diff. Any ideas?
Not gonna get round to checking forlumpy oils in the suspected areas until Sunday so thought I put it out there for some good ideas.

I'm in the UK, Manchester. Do a bit of laing, and some pay and play. I know a lot of it is down to the driver, I just want to feed the beast if I can. I'm on a tight budget just like every other poor f#cker with a 200tdi csw!
 
Sounds like a rather OTT approach to fixing your vehicle.

What vehicle is it? If it's a D2, then they don't all have a centre diff lock. However on D1's/Defenders, etc.. it is common for the linkage to not work correctly, esp if its not really been used much. Or the linkage could not be adjusted correctly. So even if it looks like it is going in on the lever, it might not be moving the arm enough on the actual box.

Would think it highly unlikely that the centre diff has broken at the same time. As for the rear, I think its been covered in your other thread. Broken half shaft or diff. Rear diff is easy to pull and swap for a used replacement.

I'm doing mine in the morning as i broke my rear diff last Sunday at a trials event. Depending on what vehicle you have, a 2nd diff might only be £50 plus a couple of gaskets and an hours effort.

New transfer box would likely be needed if your centre diff is bust (but I truly doubt it). £200-400 most likely. Rear diff if you want a locker of some kind. £500-1000+ depending on setup. If you beef the rest of the axle up and go for a HD diff from Ashcroft, then probably £1200.

If you aren't off roading it and then pretty seriously, a locker and beefed up axle are somewhat wasted tbh.

Linkage issues/failure to engage centre lock, combined with rear half shaft/diff failure was what I was thinking too.
 
With Turboman on this one,Get them sorted first and see how well a properly working standard landy can perform before going further.

I have a 110 defende. 200tdi. 93 so one of the latest ones. Had her 18months now and my off roading ranges from green laning and pay and play. I'm very impressed with the standard defender, and it is all about how good the driver is most of the time. The reason for the upgrade would have been because of the few times that I've got stuck or failed to crest a steep slope etc.
Tbh I've kinda lost the passion for any upgrades and just want my ol'girl back on the road. She's been parked up for 4 weeks now, so I'm seriously considering picking up a cheap second hand disco box and is I need to a 22nd rear diff. I still need to get her to the garage for a proper diagnosis but trying to get someone out to tow me is proving difficult.
Sometimes I really hate loving these things!
 
So seeing as the mechanic drive her into the ramp while the handbrake was engaged, this confirms the linkage mechanism is not locking properly. Spot on, it was the rear half shaft. Totally stripped. Thank God the transfer is holding for now.
Gonna take it back to the guy who put my box in and get him to re-adjust the linkage.
Bearings brake pads and disks changed in the rear also and 1 stub axle. Hopefullly that'll keep the rear sorted for a while. Need to do the front at some point.
