Not sure if its a problem, maybe just my curiosity but - ........
I know what the Diff Lock is for - it ensures that all wheels will be driven even when there is no friction. It stops wheels spinning by locking out the differential on both front and rear axles.
BUT, what I don't know is how does shifting the diff lock lever to the left make this happen? I could maybe see how it could physically do something to the front diff., but how (physically) does it make the rear axle differential lock?
Car is a late '94 M reg Tdi300 Disco 138 k miles used for towing because the tow hitch has had work done to the trailer socket wiring. Reverse gear is to the right and towards rear.
I am asking because I think that sometimes my diffs are stuck in locked position as the wheels tend to 'jump' or 'jerk' around bends on the road (at say 20 - 25 mph - diff lock light NOT on and yes the bulb does work when I consciously put it into diff lock). Also, sometimes when I try to come out of diff lock, the dashboard diff lock light stays on. It can sometimes stay on for 5 minutes and then goes off, typically at the same time as I change a gear (any gear!).
So could somebody try to explain what's going on here?
thanks if you can.
