Hi, I have 03 Disco 2 auto. There is a chart by the transfer box lever showing how to operate the lock but I can't find anything in the hand book nor can I move the lever over sideways. I am doing something wrong?

its got a H gate on it so you have to move it into central position b4 moving it across,, if ya had the car a while an never used it, it will probably be seized up,, there are loads of threads on here advisin how to fix.. just type stuck diff lock in search box and you'll find somethin..

Hi, are you actually reading the label/chart correctly? I am thinking it more likely that you don't actually have a CDL mechanism operational, hopefully I am wrong!
Does the actual shifter knob display 'diff lock' on it or is it representative of the label perhaps just saying 'hi lo' for your ratios?

If you don't have a lockable diff then your lever simply won't shift to the left without mods being undertaken. It is also quite unlikely that the linkage will seize up as it is cable operated and therefore far more reliable than the D1 series vehicles with their mechanical linkage. The genuine cable will have dirt/dust/water seals both ends and pre-lubricated inside the cable.

I have a 53 Disco. When you look at the gear lever charts, the left hand one doesn't show the diff lock, it just shows the H-N-L logo. The right hand one does seem to indicate diff lock. However, they changed the diff lock spec for the 2003 model year, and the diff lock seems to have been an option. However, the stickers are the same - the give away is the gear lever. If that has diff-lock written on it, I believe you have the option. They changed the specs again in 2004.

Search the forums further and this topic has been discussed at length, and there are articles on www.discovery2.co.uk about retrofitting it.

I used to have a Disco I 300tdi when I lived in Zimbabwe and I used it a lot there! Unless you're doing really tough stuff, you shouldn't need it. The traction control and HDC will cope with most situations in the UK, but for teh traction control to work properly, you have to use a bit more throttle than you would normally use when you have a spinning wheel. You have to have the wheels turning fast enough for the system to detect the wheel with no traction.

Hope that helps!
Cheers!

Land Rover never changed the console label between vehicles that do or dont have diff lock. As alreayd stated, if it does not have "Diff lock" embosed on the top of the transfer lever knob, then you dont have one, so ignore the label.

Thanks everybody. I don't think it does show diff. lock on the lever. I will check later when it stops snowing (if ever)

really???

is the D2 different to the D1 then? on my old disco and my 110 you can get diff lock from high neutral or low on the transfer box.

would be a bit daft having to fanny around going into neutral just to get diff lock

my 2000 disco2 auto has H_N_L only. i think as graham says the HDC and traction control are instead of diff lock.

early d2s had tc and H_N_L only but allegedly later models were supposed to have had the diff lock reconnected as well as tc.

if it doesnt have diff lock there is a kit available to do the conversion

I've been in and out of diffloclk all day in the disco. whilst driving on icy roads. and not once have I put it in neutral. just flick it left to engage right to disengage.. at any speed ya want to so long as wheels int spinning. It requires no special considerations at all just on or off as required.

Surely the wheels are spinning at any speed..just at varying rates??:confused:

Sorry I forgot it was Saint Pedants day! :D

I should have said "As long as the wheels are not spinning, at differing speeds"

I am now off to say 10 hail Marys and will then bugger me self wiv a 10" crucifix..   :(
