Hi everyone,
I have got a defender 90 on a 92 J Plate, the gears seem to be stuck in diff lock and when i do a full lock it grabs, I have moved the diff lock gearstick to high and low and that seems fine but its still locked into diff lock, no matter wat i do with the lever it makes no diff also the 4x4 dash light does not come on and I have put a new bulb in to make sure that its not dodgy, anyone got any ideas because apart from that its a lush motor even though later on I will be selling it because I am after a 110 model thanks nev

Are you sure it's in Diff lock?

What do you mean by "when i do a full lock it grabs"?

Diff Lock is operated by moving yr lever to the left!
Moving into High or Low ratio will make no difference!

Hello Bromsgrove Defender
When I turn the steering onto full lock and drive forward the it seems to struggle as though the rear axle is pushing against the front axle,?? and when its on full steering lock the rear wheel can snatch the tarmac
I was told that it might be stuck in diff lock but no matter wat I do with the diff lock lever its still the same, I feel its the diff lock is the problem but I have tried and tried to get it out but no matter how or where I put the diff lever it makes no difference ps I can get the high and low no problem I am mech minded but have not worked on 4x4's before

the diff lock sensor on your trans box could be ****ed thats why the light is not on.
diff lock lever push left diff lock on push right diff lock off.

to check diff lock.take off brake. USE TROLLEY JACK and lift front drivers wheel slightly off ground at the axel, dis engage diff lock ( push right) stick head out of window to see wheel, on tickover GENTLY lift cluth if vehicle wants to go forward diff lock is engaged, if wheel turns diff lock is not engaged.
DO THIS SLOWLY you dont want to shoot off the jack.

The best way to check if it is indeed in Diff Lock would be to park up on a flat surface, chock the wheels, take yr handbrake off and take the car out of gear, lift one wheel off the ground.
If ya can spin tha wheel round yr not in Diff lock, Simples :D

Much safer than trying to drive off the jack.

Hiu I jacked up the landy with the offside front off the deck just like you have told me to do and the wheel does NOT turn by hand, so wats the possible problem please

Assuming you've done everything correctly to check whether it really is in diff lock you might want to do a search on here under Diff Lock you'll find a great peice by the Mad Hat Man just swap Disco for Defender ;)

It does indeed sound like the diff lock is engaged....providing the handbrake was off?

if it is in diff lock and pulling the diff lock lever to the right do not disengage it, it could be something as simple as the linkage which is a cheap fix.
