Just doing a thorough check of the old girl ready for the MOT in a few weeks and although not needed for the MOT my diff lock light has stopped working. The diff lock works, as done the checks so i know its probably the switch.

Got a new one ready, and had a look to do it this afty and access is to say the least none existence from underneath, so does anyone know if you can easily get access to it with the centre console out, as can't remember how much you can get at when I had mine out about 3 years ago when freeing up the linkage. Not sure if it makes any difference having an auto box?

Cheers

im doing a gear box change on mine at minute, and theres no access from above withought taking the centre console oput (10 min job) then drilling all pop rivets out and removing the covers.

mines manual not sure it its any diff

Yeah, have had the console out before when i freed up the linkage, but just wanted to check on the access before i start to strip it out, to save doing it for no reason if access was just as crap as from the underneath.

Will look at having a go from inside, cheers

It six years since I replaced my diff lock switch from underneath. From what I remember removing the centre console wouldn't have helped. Here's a pic of it

I couldn't actually see this. The pic was taken by holding the camera up. The job was one by feel.

It's definitely easier having access from above but it can be done from below and it would save removing the centre console and drilling out the cover plate.
Cheers mark

Sorry just realised you've said you have an auto box. Not sure if the access is the same as a manual

Richard, that pic is one I have already printed out ready for the job after I trawled the site for DIY's ;)

Mark, I have already drilled out the rivets when I freed up the linkage, so that's not a problem, was just looking to make the job easier, and if taking out the console will help, then I am all for it, as its only a 15 min job (from memory).

Will see if I get time tonight and might given it a go, and will report back to what access if any you get from the inside - as anything for an easier life!

Ah ok. In that case pull the console out, I managed to do mine from underneath by wedging myself between the chassis and gearbox and pretty much doing it by feel but it wasn't easy. If your doing it from above or at least mostly from above you will be cable to see what your working on.

Try to only loosen the locknut just enough so you can remove the sensor then you can set your new one to the same length. I never done this which resulted in a bit of fiddling once on the car to get it so the box operated properly and the light stayed on.

Cheers mark

Thanks for tip - will give it a go tonight, and see what happens....can also re-grease the lever etc since its apart too - won't do it any harm.

good tips guys.
replacing the switch is one job I have meant to do for ages,
looked for it once last year,
then the year before.
will try again this year.

the light never worked when I got my disco nearly 4 years ago.

I`ve done most other stuff to my old landie, but not the switch replacement.
yep, its a bastid ob, thats why its not been done yet.

fingers crossed, for this year eh :)

OK, off to look at my daughters KA,
"again".........................................

Yeah, its one of those jobs, that doesn't really need doing as a pain in the ar$e but annoys the hell out of me for not working right.

So thought whilst I am sorting out everything, gonna do this too.

Will have a camera with me to see if I can get any pics from the 'top side'.

If your looking from underneath the switch is about 3" behind the difflock lever but you'll need a mirror to see it unless your heads the size of a tennis ball haha.

Before you remove the switch pull the connectors off it and join them with a short length of wire and turn the ignition on. The difflock light should come on, if it doesn't then the bulb in the dashboard could be faulty, not the switch

All done, diff lock light now works :D

Was a snapped wire at the connector, so just had to put on some new connectors and all is well, so i have a spare new switch if anyone needs one.

You get to see the switch better with the console off, but i still found it was easier to pull off/put on the spades from underneath.

But at least that's one of those crappy jobs ticked off my list, even though i snapped the electric window panel...so new one on order, but at least my light comes on.....

Will post up pics tomorrow for future reference for forum members, as just thawing out with a drink ;)

I only just managed to get my hand through the top around the lever to only just touch the switch, which helped guide on the connectors, and then I went from underneath to put them on securely. So it does help a little being able to see what you are doing, and only took around 10-15 mins to get the centre console out.

So hope this might help someone in the future ;)

:D:D:D:D

thanks mate.
brill.

although mines a manual, i can have a look via the top..

No probs - was certainly easier to see what was going on from above, and that I had a broken wire.

Sorry for the bad quality in pics tho - got quite cold and stopped the flash working on my phone - never had that message before!
