It's very clear to see that me sIII restoration project has a blown up front diff, no connection between the prop and the wheels, clearly. The diff casing has a dent in the front, Any theories as to why the diff may have failed?
BTW: have checked, they are not locking hubs, they are straight through.

they do eventually, the 2 pin diff isnt the strongest

Well, never you mind. As it turns out, it was a halfshaft. a very, very mangled half shaft indeed. i'm going to need to take it apart to get the bloody end out!

You normally have to drop the diff out when a half shaft goes to clean out all the bits! Well worth considering replacing both shafts, especially rears as they tend to fatigue fail at a similar age.

Why did you feel the need to dismantle the diff ?
Thought setting them back up was quite involved.

Like your confidence think I would have put a dial gauge on it 1st to see whether it was within tolerances.
Document how you get on with it as I have a one sitting to look at which has too much backlash and as they are becoming harder to find will probably have a go at it over this winter.

well go you! i think i'll have it tested if i can, by a garage. I need bearing races pressed in, so i'll have to, again, go to a garage for that. It is stripped down and sitting in diesel at the mo, i'll begin work as soon as i can, depending on when i get them parts ordered!
