hi there have just taken delivery of a pair of 3.54 disco diffs that were described as coming from disco 1 200tdi had intended to bold strait in to my 73 88 petrol ,but they have 24 spline spider gears , can i swap spiders from my 10 spline diff to make this work, the diffs are suffix c 95,cheers andy
 
Would the r&p fit the 10 spline carrier? Or would 24 spline axles work on series housing?

r and p ?,series diff carrier wont fit in 24 spline case as even if you swap crown wheels offset is different ,24 spline is of no use to you you need 10 spline 3.54 and maybe a hole in rear axle case for filling oil unless 10 spline diff has filler plug ,early rrc did thats why they were used,but 10 spline disco or def fit ok
 
you could possibly fit the 3.54 ring and pinion into the old 4.7 Series diff housing which has the required 10 spline centre, this will remove any bearing incompatability apart from possibly the one on the pinion shaft

so you'd have to remove the inner race from both shafts and swap them over (a pig of a job)

next problem will be the pinion height which is set using shims and a dial guage by rights

and finally there'll be the need to centre the ring (crownwheel) correctly to the pinion to get it meshing correctly

it's been a long time since i looked but google "Crown Differentials" as he had detailed write ups from memory on the differences between early and late diffs and how to assemble them plus can sell you the required shims and bearing adaptors if needed

Kam Differentials are also a useful source of parts

i have personally mixed and matched early imperial 4.3 (yes 4.3) parts into a late metric 10 spline 3.54 housing and centre due to the bearings having collapsed in the original 4.3 housing, half the bearing measurements between metric and imperial don't match but the really lucky bit was the pinion shafts were the same diameter

my build wasn't done to the manual but by feel, i got away with it and built a nice quiet diff but you may not

except 4.7 diff carrier has a different offset to cater for smaller diameter of pinions, you can bolt crown wheel to it but pinion wont fit, pinion bearings stayed the same from series to disco 2
 
ok i stand corrected but i did say "possibly" :), it was just another idea for him to work with which is why i also suggested he looked at Crown Differentials for the details

like anything research is good along with folks sharing thier knowledge/experience

"early" pinion bearings are different at least in the angle they run from memory (it was two years ago that i built it), i was also refering to the ones used in the 4.3 diff (and possibly early 4.7) with the aluminium seal carrier on the nose of the casing from the Rover P4 (sorry i hadn't made that clear), i do believe the later 4.7 diffs may have the metric bearings, i can't verify or deny that but i would expect it in the later "standardised" Series 3 motors
 
Thanks for the replays guys may just have a go see wat works if not will sell em and try to find sum 10 spline ones crowndiff site is down at the mo so can't have a look at that

no point sell them and get 10 spline unless you buy 2 x 10 spline 3.54 diff carriers
 
I'd say send the diffs back, if you want 10 spline ones look at old defenders and discos. Like Pre 92 to be safe I think as the 93 in the breakers yard is on 24 spline but imperial callipers :confused:
 
thanks guys have googled the crap outa this one sounds doable but so much work would need bearing shims for center, and crownwheel spacer .so more cash that i an,t got.thanks for the replys andy

crown wheel spacer only works if you fit 4.7 cw to 3.54 carrier not the other way round
