Of course you are a dreamer. You bought a Ford Pop and you want to turn it into a Cosworth. There are things you can do to improve the power output, but it's minimal without spending silly money. The bigger turbo, larger intercooler, super chip route you dream of is available IF you want to spend a bloody fortune and blow your engine to bits. Then twist your gear box internals like a stick of spanish. If you want a fast motor buy one, the one you have can be improved slightly but will never be a racing car. If you want lots of grunt stick a V8 in it and a HP24e.

A bit more on track now, thanks ;)

I assumed the stronger box was used in the early l322, but it seems to be that it was just the 4.6 Discos instead in the 02-04 years.
So is the 4.6 auto box a tried and tested upgrade for the diesel box?
There seems to be plenty used ones for sale on ebay, and no diesel boxes which would make it an attractive proposition to start with.

No the L322 uses a different box as far as i am aware. The HP22e box was used on the P38 diesels and the 4.0 litre petrol. The HP24e was used on the P38 4.6 petrol. It has as far as i know, a larger torque convertor. That is why it has a longer bell housing. As for internal mods i don't know about those. If you fit a HP 24e into diesel and change the bell housing fitting the smaller diesel convertor you sort of defeat the object of the exercise to me. The smaller convertor will not handle the torque and will overheat. The L322 is a different animal altogether.

I don't think anyone has actually tried it, if they have it's not appeared on the forums. I have looked into it and as long as you use a ZF4HP24e from a P38 4.6 and it's going into a P38 diesel it looks perfectly feasable. According to ZF the only difference between the 22 and the 24 is that the 24 is slightly longer to accomodate heavier clutch packs. This is taken care of by the different spacer used between the autobox and the transfer box. It's something I would like to do but time and money prevent it at the moment. When my box finally gives out, I will look at buying a 24 to replace it with. If I was in the Uk I would do it, not much available in the way of used P38 parts here in France.

According to my info, the 4.6 reverted to the smaller torque convertor, so it should handle the torque OK:)

Want to pipe down Mr Keyboard warrior? Great way to welcome someone new onto the forum! Hope you're proud.

And as for your turning a 'Ford Pop into Cosworth' short sighted nonsense, have you never heard of the tuning industry? And most relevantly to a Ford Pop, have you never heard of a hot rod?!

I suppose you'd rather everyone just mundanely discussed the well trodden route of typical car ownership where the balance sheet rules over any form of enthusiasm or thinking out the box. If I want to spend silly money I will. What I am looking for is advice on how to tune a car, not advice from a financial advisor.
So if all you have are insults and a condescending attitude I'd prefer if you didn't get involved.

Interesting, so in theory it should go in with the appropriate spacer.
Wonder if electronically the box would be compatible with the car's management?

No mate, i have modded more cars than you ever will. I am telling you the draw backs if you don't like it tough. I have been at this game a long time, i do know what i am talking about, it is obvious you don't from the questions you ask. You need a modders forum where you will find like minded people.

Calling me a dreamer, and then continuing to try and belittle me whilst bigging up yourself shows me exactly the type of person you are. And that's not a particularly useful one to say the least.
You know nothing about me, so what you say is pretty presumptuous and egocentric.

Even if it was true that you were somehow so much better than me, what kind of person blows their own trumpet that hard?!

If you can play one, play it, if you can't ask daft questions. I in no way think i am better than anyone. But i think i do know a little more about motors than you do. If you have a proper question ask it. But not what's the biggest turbo i can fit on my lawn mower.

You know NOTHING about me! So you have no justification on which to say you know "a little more about motors than I do".

When buying into a car I'm unfamiliar with I will tend to ask existing owners about tuning that particular model. Here the chip and intercooler route is well documented, but I want to know if anyone has gone further. It's a 'discussion forum', not a 'big up myself and belittle the new guys arena'. I am not asking daft questions, I'm looking for information.

Chill out and get off your high horse. Feel free to add your bit about how fuelling can be increased, compatibility of larger turbos, or how to go about utilising a stronger gearbox. On the other hand if all you're going to do is spout obnoxious egocentric rants you can keep your thoughts to yourself ;)

You are CONSIDERING a P38 diesel. You have not got one, you are just considering one. But you want more than the meagre power they have. Consider a 4.6 V8 then. You have been told the draw backs, make your choice. You are not asking daft questions? Why do you think you have not had loads of enthusiastic answers? When you consider something, consider something with lots of potential, not something with very little. You have been told that but still prattle on. If you get a medium miler and start sticking larger turbos on and over fuelling it you will destroy it PDQ. Things like that are ok on new or rebuilt engines for a while but unless you spend mega bucks zeroing the motor you will damage it in short order. That's the best advice you will get take it or leave it.

Ade, do a search for posts from "arron beast unleashed". AFAIK he had the most heavily modded (for power) P38 around. He's since moved on to a L322 but there's a lot of posts from him explaining his mods (bigger IC, upped turbo pressure, bigger injectors, remap..).

I'm sick to death of your condescending attitude. How terrible of me. I'm asking about tuning options before buying a car! I'm being perfectly polite yet I'm being accused of being a dreamer and 'prattling on'!
Tell you what, next time you see me asking a question, just keep your thoughts to yourself ;)

Cheers mate. I'll have a search for that. Very interested to see how much (or how little?) hassle a tuned P38 would be in reality. Looks like my most likely next purchase, and best to gather as much experience before deciding to delve into tuning it or not.

dont bother..its a crap 2.5l...in a 2ton plus car..

it can be made "ok" but nothing more without spending ££££££..

be a better bet to do engine transplant..ie toyota 4.2 td etc, even considering the ecu problems you will encounter it would be a better route..(along with going manual box)

You have been given good advice. Sorry it wasn't what you wanted to hear. Take it or leave it. :p:p:p

Are you still going on?!

I'm fine with hearing about the ins and outs of how to deal with upgrades on a car, but as I said I'm not interested in your egocentric posts and condescending attitude towards me.

If being told your barking up the wrong tree is condescending, go for it mate. You obviously know sod all or you would not be asking silly questions. Dream on dreamer.:p:doh::doh::doh:
