hi all, on my p38 dt i have had an annoying constant squeek when it is idling. so far i have replaced both tension er pulleys, air con pump and pulley, both belts, and today the water pump. I'm at my Witt's end with it. the noise is so hard to PIN point. so now I'm thinking crankshaft pulley. any one know if these can be squeaky? it dose have a wobble to it.

you tried taking the alternator belt of and seeing if it is the alternator making the noise.

hi, its definitely not the alternator, I'm just wondering if i should buy a crankshaft pulley, there is a fair bit of play in it. I'm just not that sure that there is anything in that pulley to make that sort of noise. its not an on /off type squeak, but a continues constant squeaking noise if you know what i mean.

have you checked to see if the crank pulley is not touching somewhere is as you say it is wobbling / buckled.

hi, i have tried pipe dressing, and the crankshaft pulley isn't rubbing against anything. the pulley just has a side to side wobble if you know what i mean? i think I'm looking at around 300 pounds for it, but i have only tried island 4x4 so far so may get it cheaper elsewhere.

Well, Land rover want £450+Vat for a new pully, and the independant suppliers have run out of the copies apparently, but I managed to get one from Euro Car Parts for £75, its for BMW 525 and all signs look like the P38 uses the same one.

Apparently the rubber breaks down on old ones and gives the wobble and vibration, I'm hopefully going to change mine this weekend and I hope for a vibration free car after!

i shall ring them tomorrow, the cheapest i have found so far is 250 from paddocks. lookers landrover in colchester wanted nearly 600!

The part is correct, the air-con pulley is separate and bolts onto the front of the crankshaft pulley, you don't need a new one of these.

I replaced mine on the weekend, went relatively smoothly, managed to get the viscous fan off for the first time, its a left-hand thread btw. The pulley came off in two pieces, but it wasn't completly shagged by any means.

It's made a slight difference to a buzz around 1500 rpm but not made the massive reduction in vibration I was hoping for. Will change the pulleys, tensioner and belts next, maybe the engine mountings if possible.

Did you do the crankshaft oil seal ta the same time

got my seal to do, how bad a job is it

brilliant, i did wonder if it bolted on, i have tried most motor factors and all they have told me is that they only had one without the air con pulley. i shall get one after work tomorrow.

No, believe you have to undo the crankshaft bolt to change that, and that was something I wanted to avoid! It may be easier than I thought, on an auto you'll have to lock up the flywheel, and then you'll need the mother of all breaker bars I expect.

I fully expect the water pump to play up now after the treatment it got removing the viscous fan...
