Hey! If this is in the wrong forum please feel free to move it (newbie round here lol!)

Me and the old man are looking at getting a Discovery to play about in off roading. Seen a few diesels about, and were not looking for anything expensive etc...

But, there are also a few V8's knocking about for cheap money too (within our budget of upto about £1200) im a bit of a rover nut myself so id love the opportunity for a great V8 motor!, so my real question is what are they like off roading compared to the diesels? Anyone got experiance of them?

Any help really appreciated!

thanks

Stuart

Stu,
Gpoing to fnd out myslef in teh next few weeks, have an old V8 myslef. From what I found out here, they are pretty good off road except (very important this)
they do not like water, so no wading unless you really prep it up.

Oh and of course, bloddy thirsty things, mine just cannot seem to get past a single garage without calling in....

DIESEL will get my vote everytime

Economic (ish)
Brilliant low down grunt (torque)
Water friendly (long as you got a snorkel, will happily completely submerge)
Not so easy to stall on that wicked climb

Downside - lack pure performance of a V8

The funny thing is, the LR G4 challenge always seemt o opt for V8 auto's, but then they probably got their own oil rig !!!

Brill thanks for the replies, we were thinking about the water issue with the V8, got my eye on a diesel one anyway thats local, so all being well! :)

I think the Off-Road order of preference is reckoned to be

V8 automatic (by a long way)

300 tdi Auto

200 tdi auto

v8 manual
300 tdi manual
200 tdi manual

All you experts out there ... is that about the way of it?

For serious fun: V8 (Raw Power)
For serious off-roading: Diesel (extremely low grunt AND potential to be a submarine)

I'd prefer auto, but manual would do as well. You just need to drive 'em a bit differently.

Well, we've finally found one! :D My uncles selling his 200tdi the end of the month, so we're going for that one. Tidy machine hes spent a fair amount on it, so makes it better for us to run! ;)

Looking forward to gettin her and start playing!

200 tdi............tough/reliable easy and cheap to fix, put on new cam belt and never overheat it! No sensors/ECU's/spark leads/distributor ect. Can run without alternator/battery/starter.

Guess wot I got?

charlesy is correct i`ve been around offroading circuct along time v8`s most used in ccvt and comp safari oil burner in challenges none like water use electric fan on v8 and cover dizzy

Diesel all the way !!!!

Had both V8 Petrol (on Gas) and diesels... The V8 with a Thor stainless sytem sounds identical to a TVR which is fantastic but there also about as reliable as a TVR at the first sign of water !! Its marigolds on the dizzy cap time !!

Diesel however (running 300TDI) is Soooo much more reliable and water friendly ;-) I have a 3" lift on my disco and ive waded through ponds which floods well over the bonnet !! No probs there !! Dont advise that of course tho until you get a wading kit, plug a few holes here and there etc.. Power can be slightly less on the diesel but with a panel filter, EGR blanking plate, De-cat stainless system, mine now happily keeps up with my buddys V8 Range :)

Enjoy your 200 TDI !!! Im sure you'll love it ;)

200 all the way, reliablitly, drivability, off roading, had a mixture of all of them and am even buying another 200 at the moment.

I've got A V8 with 4Barrel Webber carb and a 300TDI.for pure performance go for the V8 for serious off roading go for the diesel.

The V8 have there distributor at the front, my v8 conked out going through a resonably large but not deep puddle in Sunbury High Street(very embarasing).Fuel constumption is meassured in how many garages you can pass not mpg.
The V8 noise is fantastic and performance very good.servicing very easy and most parts very affordable

The diesel by comparason is desperatly slow but once moving is o.k as the TDi has the same amout of torque as the V8 but at much lower rpm its not as busy and is execlent at towing, off roading and will take serious abuse without breaking sweat.Doesn't suffer from getting wet like the V8.

If it is a toy for just off roading go TDI if for mainly road use and like petrol stations go V8
