Hi, my 2001 dhse was difficult to start when cold so i thought i would change the glow plugs. i also smelt a faint smell of diesel ocasionally.
when i removed the plastic cover above the injectors i noticed that the 'well' around the front-most injector was full of diesel. i started the engine and could see diesel bubbling out of a black fibre type hose that is connected to the injector.
i think now i will take the rangie to a local independant dealer and get them to sort the hose, fit the new glow plugs and also do a 60000 mile service.
anyone know if the diesel hose problem is serious and am i looking at a big bill?
thanks
Will

I hope not,the leak off hoses are less than a tenner - even from LR and take less than 1/2 hr to fit. They will also cure your cold starting issue, you didnt put new glow plugs in did you ?

no, i haven't put the NGK glow plugs in yet. They cost me £50 though. Do you think i don't need them and the leaking hose is causing the starting problem?
symptoms are: when the glow plug light goes out, i turn the key. the motor starts then immediately stalls. sometimes if i cycle the key two or three times it starts better

It fires then dies because the leaky pipes allow air to be drawn back into the pump overnight, very common fault. The pipes will fix it.

hi mine was doing this and my fuel pump timing was out only by a bit but enough to make a difference when cold.i also fitted new heater plugs because after testing they were not drawing enough amps, and two were not working at all. Fitted new ones and got timing set now starts exellent every time hot or cold.hope this helps.

Hi rodent,

I've seen this a few times on the forum and its exacty the problem I've got. Could you give some quick instructions to replace the leak-off pipes and where to get the pipes from?

Thanks

You can buy the stuff by the yard from good motor factors.

I actually had a go at doing this today, and I must say it is pretty straight forward. Just unbolt the cover and you will see the hoses in place. The front injector on mine was also covered with diesel and the pipes had gone very stiff- (compared to the new ones) I just changed the front two section as the rest of them seem to dry of diesel. I also managed to change the 2 glows furthest to the rear. I will do the rest of the work tomorrow as I ran out of daylight.
The old glow plugs certainly look as if they had a section which was slightly rougher on one side- probably never been changed.
I tried to start it up after it stuttered but never started, but at least is was better tahn 2 days ago when it took nearly 6 attempts to get it going! I am feeling that it may be a combination of things, including the fuel draining back into the tank- I have around a quarter tank left and have noticed it getting harder to start- ( bt still not sure if it has something to do with the weather)

Does anyone know if you need the 8mm non return valve or the 6mm- I know they are both bosch parts just wondering if anyone else had done the valve mod, and if so, what was the part number?

I thinking will it be hard to change plug number 1, 2 and 3 - seem very tight spave to work with even with the inlet manifold off?
