Hi,
Just want to let you all know that the Relay and resistor fix is brilliant-
I have just finished fitting it to my rangie - no problem - She starts a treat

Resistors are available from RS components - on line - a card of 10 (smallest amount available) costs about 30p plus postage.

The one difference to the original fix that I used was to fit a timer relay fed off an Ignition only feed from the fuse box set to 20 seconds.

I know the relay is doing the job because once started the engine ticks over at approx 50 RPM faster untill the relay trips off and it drops back to 750RPM.

A great fix that works any one need a couple of relays? If so Email me

hi bigstoo
i got the p38 hot starting problem have u still got the diagrams still if not could u tell me where to get the 2k ohm resitor from or a part no as theres a few different sorts of them thanks steve

Thank you so ,so much I am having a spot of probs ? its printing you copys odd, I can not read all your info. Do you write in (word) it would be great if you would write in word you info. I have the plan OK but would love to read your info would you have time and be a star, and write it in word please, I would welcome that so much and I think many would find it better to read your fine info. Thank you so so much Graham
PS would you find time to write it in Word not copy it in word we can not read it sorry

Did the modification last week and so far so good. Dont wish to tempt fate but all seems to be going well . I have enclosed some pictures to help anyone else have a go .
Big thanks to Tiga and Bigstoo.

Graham

I am so glad and gratefull to all you members trying out my hot start mod congratulations to all that have done the mod and hope we can keep spreading the word and helping others cheers tiga,my only question to the mod in the picture was why 2 resisteres?

The resistors i have configured are a 2k2 and a 22k in parallel .These are standard and easy to get hold of .Maplins do them for 12p each .i have used 0.6 watt and it still works so assume they are up to it.
I took the pics then realised after it would have been best to put a 5 amp fuse inline with the relay feed . when i get time i will put the fuse in and try and get some better pics . Recommend to use min 1.5mm square wire!!

From looking at the diagrams and reading other peoples posts can anyone tell me at what point the relay opens and the ecu gets a true reading from the engine temperature sensor .(Diagrams are confusing)
My car starts great now but it does seem to be idleing at higher revs .
They person who has put a timmer reports that their engine idles at 7500 after the relay has de- energised.
It looks to me like the feed off the white and red wire may be permanent once the ignition key is turned, in which case the 2k resistor is allways in circiut and the relay is doing nothing.
When i put the inline fuse in im connecting an led in parallel with the relay coil so i can see if the relay drops out.

Big thanks again to Tiger and Bigstoo

hi, ive just finished doing your fix on my p38 diesal, it works fine, the glow plugs come on when the engine is warm now, they didnt before. also the revs have gone up on tickover, from about 750rpm to 1100rpm. is this normal? or have i done something wrong?

It sounds like you may have done something wrong as it should tickover the same as before check out all your connections again to make sure you have not put a wire on wrongcheers tiga

Sorry for not getting back to those who have asked questions on this mod , i had hoped to fit the LED to see if the relay feed drops out.
Only really busy at work.
One option is to just wire a switch in paralell with the 2k resisitor which is its self in series with the temp sender.
Open the switch to get the plugs on and close it to go back to normal running.

Alternatively there must be a live feed that is only live for a few seconds on starting.

I ordered my relay from Landranger in Stockport and he posted it to me for £6 ish hope he doesnt mind me giving out the number 0161-483 4313 .

hi you could go and get the revs turned down, but thats not sorting the problem did it rev high before the mod? as the mod should only change how the vehicle starts, tiga
