I have been offered some diesel fuelled cab heaters but have got one to fit to my landy to see if they are any good. Its a 24v heater designed for trucks and I am planning to fit it with the battery under the passenger seat box. That way the exhaust pipe from it can go out through the floor and back and the intake pipe can go the same way but forward. I can buy a transformer from ebay to give me 24v and theres a rheostat that goes to the dashboard. The bit giving me concern is the diesel supply. Has anyone tapped into the landys fuel tank as this would be more convenient then setting up a seperate tank? Does anyone see any safety issues putting the heater near the battery?

You can just run a T-piece from the fuel line if you want but bear in mind if you run veg oil then you wont be able to share a tank, may be easier to get a small tank, something like a stock car 5L tank or a aluminium header tank at about 2L....

I would be interested to know if it could go next to the battery under the passenger seat too, I have a Eberspacer D2 to put in mine and was considering putting it behind the rear bulkhead with exhaust etc going out the floor..... Next to the battery would use a dead space nicely ?

a normal tank, no but a fuel cell tank, possibly, as they are sealed iirc.

If you do any wading I wouldn't advise the battery box. Just plumb a pick up into the diesel tank or have a seperate tank.

How easy would it be to drill a hole in the top of the tank to put a feed pipe in? Its a big thing for me drilling into a perfectly good tank in case i cock it up.

i normally use another fuel pick up pipe
make sure you fit it near sender unit so you can put nuts on the bolts

This extract is a direct lift from the install manual for a Webasto Air Top 3500/5000. Hope its useful.

8.6.5 Combustion air supply

Under no circumstances may the combustion air be taken
from areas occupied by people. The combustion air intake
opening must not point in the direction of travel. It must be
located so that it cannot become clogged with dirt.

NOTE

The combustion air must be extracted using a combustion
air line from a position that is as cool as possible and
protected from splashing water for petrol heaters.
If the heater is in a sealed installation box, the combustion
air must be drawn in from the outside and the emissions
fed to the outside. Pipe passage holes must be made in
such a way as to ensure that the ingress of exhaust fumes
into the interior of the vehicle should not occur.
If dirty combustion air is expected, a combustion air filter
may be fitted (Air Top 3500/5000 ST D only). An intake
silencer must be used for an intake hose length of < 0.6 m.

8.6.6 Exhaust line

Rigid pipes of unalloyed or alloyed steel with a minimum
wall thickness of 1.0 mm or flexible piping of alloyed steel
only must be used as exhaust line.
The exhaust pipe must be secured to the heater and
exhaust silencer with a pipe clip, Part No. 20 965A.
The exhaust silencer should ideally be installed
near the heater.
The flow direction is arbitrary.
The heater may also be operated without a silencer.

8.6.7 Combustion air inlet and exhaust lines
NOTE

To prevent damaging the metering pump cable, exhaust
line must not be used to extend the combustion air supply
line.
Length of the combustion air intake and exhaust lines:
With silencer: max. 2.0 m
Without silencer: max. 5.0 m
Both lines are to be installed falling away from the heater.
If this is not possible, a condensate drain hole with a
diameter of 4 mm must be made at its lowest point or a
connection element with a condensate drain used.
Internal diameter of the lines:
Combustion air line: 25 mm
Exhaust line: 24 mm

NOTE

If the exhaust line is 2 m or more, insulated exhaust lines
must be used (to prevent the temperature falling below the
dew point).
Minimum bending radius: 50 mm
Total bends:
Combustion air line: max. 270°
Exhaust line: max. 270°
Discharge direction 90° ± 10°

WARNING

If the exhaust pipe mouth is positioned other than as

shown above it will pose a fire risk.

had a night heater in mine for 5/6 years now sits behind the bulk head & thermostat next to me in the cab but luckily got myself a 12 volt so knoe wiring probs,
Cant help you with the fitting though got a sparky to fit it for me.

can ya see if ya can find out what models they are and are they Erberspachers ?
If they come with the wiring looms and all accessories i'm deffo interested cos i need one for the Tranny van

Will do dellboy. They come with pipes for air intake and exhaust, a revolving vent so you can direct the hot air, and the rheostat with its wire that you fit to the dashboard to control off/on and the temp. I will check the manufacturer tomoro.

24v webasto's will work on a cheap 12v computer stepup power supply- eberspacher ones will not for some reason.

There is a dropper available for eberspacher's that does work.

i have ordered a dropper from ebay thats coming from china so I will see what thats like. Not wanting to add to the overall cost really and it was less than a tenner. Will let you know if it works.
