Veg oil is the fuel of the future. Veg oil energy is the energy of the SUN last year, trapped temporarily in the oil.
The heat and light energy from the sun is used by all green plants to combine CO2 from the air with water from the ground to make the cellulose-like substances which the plant uses to make itself grow - and which the plant also turns into veg oil which we can use.
Veg oil is CARBON NEUTRAL. It adds ZERO CO2 to the atmosphere.
Way to go huh?
Once they work out how to grow enough of it that we don't need oil wells, they'll tax it plenty.

Two things, 1. Most veg' oil is ok provided its dry (minus point 2 of 1% or better) and if its used oil which works as good as the new stuff, it as to be filtered. The thing to watch for at this time of year is palm oils and tallow as even with derv mixed in you will still have problems. 2. Veg drying oils, the most well known one is linseed. Just look on the net at oils and you will see a value on the spec' chart called 'Iodine Value' and if the oil you poor into your diesel vehicle has a number between 85 and 125, basically no problems.

I've been looking into growing me own. I've got land I could do it on, just need to figure out the logistics of planting, harvesting and extracting the oil. At first glance it probably isn't viable financially to grow say 3 or 4 acres of rape and come up with some way of extracting the oil efficiently, but I'm open to any ideas if anybody's got any.
If you planted a good high-yielding variety, and kept the bugs, birds and moulds off, you should be able to get abut 100 gallons of oil per acre,
That's about 400 to 450 litres of oil.
One has to wonder if that is worth the effort.

Has anyone here tried using veg oil in a TD6 L322?
So can you run the standard 300tdi engine off a mix or does it need some modification?
I found out the local garage which I've been using (in the sticks in Greece) shove all their old engine oil and all sorts into the diesel pumps for us unsuspecting customers. Could this be a reason mine's been running **** recently?
What sort of mpg do u get compared to straight diesel anyone know?

Yes that's about what my research came up with. It might be more cost effective to grow a more profitable crop and just use the proceeds to buy diesel. Dunno what though.
Exactly the same or a little BETTER than pump fuel.
My TD5 Disco is currently on about 25% straight veg to 75% pump fuel.

Use the GLOW timer a few times in succession and it may fire up more quickly.
Brand new TOP QUALITY glow-plugs do make a difference.
Some kero or white spirit or unleaded petrol in the fuel may assist starting from cold. Just a little (like 5% - one litre in 20) would help.
