Hi Guys,

Diesel at the pumps is £1.07 a litre from my local ASDA.

NEW veg oil on the shelves is £0.85p a litre from ASDA.

I just bought a trolley-full at 85p / litre and am saving TWENTY TWO PENCE A LITRE compared to paying at the pumps.

And my TD5 runs better on it.

I've been chucking 18litres of veg oil in and filling up with diesel and my 300Tdi is running a lot smoother off it, might try a bit more veg oil next time .

75% soya oil from MAKRO @ £13.85 for 20 litres no VAT

Is soya oil ok??? I was looking at it in Makro the other day. I have run it on veg oil and rapeseed. I thought the soya oil was supposed to be too low a calorific value to use???

Just taking things easy to be honest, only just started trying it, I'll up the percentage next tank.

I usually start with a full tank of diesel.
When it goes down to three-quarters full I shove in 20 - 25 litres of veg, which about fills it up again.

You can tell in seconds that the engine runs smoother.

Once it's down to 3/4 again I shove in another 20 - 25 litres of veg.

I will do that maybe three times, then run the tank down to 1/4, and fill it at the pumps, and start all over again.

I make a bit of BioDiesel too, and do the same with that.

The maths is simple:

Every litre of veg I put in SAVES me 25 pence at today's prices.
Every litre of BioDiesel I use saves me NINETY PENCE today.

It just has to be worth it.

Used engine oil is also a perfectly good fuel as long as you don't let it get full of crap. Every gallon of that into your tank saves you a fiver in round numbers. Mix that half-in-half with pump fuel and you could HALVE your fuel bills if you can get free used engine oil from a local garage.

The best part is not paying rip-off fuel taxes with VAT applied to the TAX!

The only downside is it is all LEGAL. This rather takes the shine off the job.

I think you have to be a bit careful with using old engine oil as a fuel. If I'm not mistaken it doesn't constitute a "fuel substitute" under the legislation as it's a hydrocarbon based oil and is therefore illegal to use as a road fuel without declaring it and paying the fuel duty.
Off-road, no problem.
